Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2054 — Tzedakah
Volume 7 · Letter 188
By the grace of Hashem,
15 Adar 5713,
Brooklyn,
To the Rav, great talmid chacham*, man who fears Hashem
and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Yitzchak [1],
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 9 Adar, in which you ask me about Biurei HaZohar*, Parshas Vayechi, page 30a. You ask me how the sefirah* of Yesod can exert its influence without passing through the channel of Malchus.
You are correct in saying that all influences reaching the worlds pass through the sefirah of Malchus. Nevertheless, some become impregnated in it, while others merely pass through. In the first case, one indeed retains the name of the level whose influence has become absorbed.
The Tanya explains all of this in Kuntres Acharon* on page 158a, as does the chassidishe maamar* entitled "My covenant, day and night," in the hemshech* of 5666 [2] which, it seems to me, you possess, and many other texts of Chassidus.
I thank you for your remark concerning the explanation of Biurei HaZohar [3] on the difference between hirhur* and machshavah*, based on the commentary of the Rashba* on tractate Berachos page 15, according to which: "hirhur is not bound to a specific language." It therefore consists in reflecting on an idea without recourse to words.
Now one may ask: from where does the Talmud deduce that one may, even in this case, equate hirhur with speech? In which case it would be necessary to deduce two principles from the term "shema" [4]: the necessity of reading it loudly enough so that one hears the words one is uttering, and the possibility of doing so in any language.
Perhaps it is possible to suggest, though this explanation is difficult to accept, that according to the Rashba one does not take into account the kedushah* and the elevation of the language. Such an interpretation would be in accord with what Biurei HaZohar says.
I have just found in Tziyun LeNefesh Chayah* on page 15d that "one shall consult the commentaries of the Rashba according to whom, if the intention of the heart suffices, one should be able to fulfill one's obligation in any language. For this intention is essential." I was pleased by this.
With my respects and my blessing,
Notes:
A) The words of Biurei HaZohar are based on the Likkutei Torah of the Arizal* on Bereishis, in the section "why does the Torah begin," according to which thought, reflection, speech, and action correspond to the four worlds: Atzilus*, Beriah*, Yetzirah*, and Asiyah*.
You know that the world of Beriah [5] is so named because it introduces creation from nothingness, as the Ramban says at the beginning of his commentary on the Torah. It is in this world that the keilim* appear [6]. Now, various texts identify them with words.
One may ask, if one considers the Zohar, vol. 3, page 229b, according to which reflection and thought correspond to the kochos* of intellectual discovery, Chochmah, and reasoned analysis, Binah. This goes against what has just been said. And the same statement is found in the Pardes*, in the section Erchei HaKinuyim, in the entry "machshavah." Yet I have not seen any commentator raise this objection.
It seems that one can distinguish a hirhur that transcends machshavah and another that is inferior to it. Generally speaking, hirhur is light and even insignificant. If it is inferior to machshavah, it is then fine relative to speech. If it surpasses it, it possesses this same character relative to thought.
All of this can be linked to what will now be explained.
B) In various texts, hirhur is set in opposition to machshavah. In others, on the contrary, it is quite clear that it includes machshavah, including the most abstract. This is often the case, in particular, for synonymous terms that a nuance allows us to distinguish, especially when they appear in the same text. It is then frequent, when one encounters the first term, to find a second and a third as well.
Let us take as an example the statement of our Sages according to which "hirhur of sin is more severe than the sin itself." The same is true even when it is a question of the most refined machshavah, which is not yet expressed in words, or even in a still more abstract form.
This is what Rabbeinu Bechayei* explains in his commentary on the Torah, on Parshas Nitzavim 29:18, in the section "and if one asks." You will also consult the Moreh Nevuchim*, chapter 2, according to the reference Rabbeinu Bechayei indicates and which presumably corresponds to chapter 8 of the third part.
Likewise, the Tanya in chapter 12 says: "As soon as it arises ... [7]."
C) This distinction between hirhur and machshavah makes it possible to explain tractate Krisus 19b, which makes a difference between intention and machshavah.
For in fact, if someone is in a state of forgetfulness at the moment when he acts, what good is it to inquire about the machshavah he had previously? One must conclude that this kavanah* persists during the action, even if it takes another form.
One can explain it according to what has just been said. For it is hirhur in one case and machshavah in the other [8]. Machshavah is here the kli* discussed in tractate Bechoros 41a. We will not say more in this letter.
I enclose for you the kuntres* whose study I recommended for this Purim.
