Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure your letter of 2 Shevat, in which you give me good news of the state of health of your daughter. May Hashem permit you, as well as your wife, to lead her toward Torah, the chuppah*, and good deeds, in good health.

You write to me that you do not study Chassidus* regularly. This is not at all judicious. Various texts of our Sages establish that study must be regular, and the consecrated expression is precisely "a fixed time for the study of Torah."

You know also the saying of the Alter Rebbe*, according to which this fixing must be not only in time but also in the mind[1]. In fact, the one and the other are linked, as one can verify in practice. Moreover, as our Sages state in Tractate Taanis* 7a, we are asked to learn a lesson from students more than from friends and even from one's master. There must therefore also be someone who receives your teaching.

Concerning what you tell me about your wife[2], it would be good to have the mezuzos* of your house checked. Moreover, your wife herself will give, on Erev Shabbos*, a few coins to the tzedakah* of Rabbi Meir Baal HaNess*[3]. As for you, you will strive, at least until the birth, which will take place at a good and fruitful moment, to keep the three studies instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe. These are addressed to all and are well known. They concern Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*.

May Hashem grant that your wife's pregnancy go well and be easy, that she give birth, in its time and easily.

בנועם קבלתי מכתבו מב' שבט, בו מודיע טובות מבריאות בתו... תחי' והשי"ת יזכהו ואת זוגתו שיחיו לגדלה לתורה ולחופה ולמעשים טובים מתוך בריאות הנכונה.

מ"ש במכתבו שבלימוד תורת החסידות אין לו קביעות, הנה מובן שאין זה נכון כלל וכלל, כי פשיטא בכ"מ במרז"ל שלימוד התורה צ"ל בקביעות וכהלשון קבעת עתים לתורה, וידוע בזה ג"כ פתגם כ"ק אדמו"ר הזקן, שענין הקביעות צ"ל לא רק בזמן אלא גם בנפש, והא בהא תליא, וכנראה במוחש. ועוד זאת דורשים מאתנו ע"פ מרז"ל (תענית ז' ע"א) שמתלמידיו אדם לומד יותר מאשר מחבריו ואפילו מרבו, שמוכרח שיהי' לו ג"כ מקבל, היינו שיפיץ אור תורת החסידות בסביבתו.

להודעתו ע"ד זוגתו תחי'. הנה מהנכון הי' לבדוק המזוזות בדירתו, וכן שזוגתו תחי' תתן בכל עש"ק איזה פרוטות לצדקת רבי מאיר בעל הנס, והוא יתחזק עכ"פ עד לאחר הלידה בשעה טובה ומוצלחת בשמירת שלשת השיעורים מתקנת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר השוים לכל נפש והם בחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים והשי"ת ימלא ימי הריון זוגתו תחי' כשורה ובקל ותלד זחו"ק בעתה ובזמנה כשורה ובקל.
