Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2009 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 7 · Letter 143

By the grace of Hashem,

13 Shevat 5713,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I reply to your letter of 5 Teves, in which you describe to me your situation. You have had various commercial activities, but, for the moment, you have not yet known success. It seems that you are astonished at this, although you give the explanation from the very beginning of your correspondence, but, presumably, you did not pay attention to it.

You begin your letter by saying that, without any initiative on your part, you received correspondence from my father-in-law, the Rebbe, the terms of which are as follows: "You will look for a good shidduch* and you will adopt the commercial activity that suits you." Then, immediately after this, you explain that you immediately took an interest in commerce, while my father-in-law, the Rebbe, was telling you indeed first to look for a good shidduch*, and afterward to adopt a commercial activity. You chose to go straight to the last stage, without preparing it in the proper manner, in conformity with the teaching of the tzaddik* of the world, the leader of Israel.

In general, there is no need to justify what my father-in-law, the Rebbe, wrote to you, the relation he establishes between these two requests, nor even the fact that he cites marriage before commerce. Nevertheless, one can understand it from the words of our Sages also reported by Likkutei Torah*, at the end of Parshas* Berachah.

The blessing is granted to the man for his wife, and the text just cited explains the reason for it. Of course, certain men provide their parnasah* without fulfilling this condition, or in anticipation of the future. For all that, the actual blessing depends indeed on the wife.

You should therefore have put into practice the teaching of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, found first a good shidduch*, in conformity with the affirmation of our Sages according to which "it is the way of a man to seek out a woman." Moreover, chasan*, the bridegroom, has the same etymology as chus darga*, one who descends from his level. The words of tzaddikim* are immutable.

The Rebbe asked you to find a good shidduch*, and if you do not alter your choice, Hashem will permit you indeed to find it. Then, there will be fulfilled in you the word of our Sages, commenting on the verse "in order to cause blessing to rest upon the doorpost of your house."

It is, of course, unnecessary to specify that you must immediately intensify your study of the revealed part of the Torah and of Chassidus*. This will be an additional channel and receptacle to draw forth and integrate the blessing of Hashem in all these domains.

You question me on the free will of the celestial bodies, for Israel and for the nations. You do not explain your question, do not say what poses difficulty for you. The idea is briefly the following:

A) The celestial bodies and the angels in no way have free will. They are only comparable to "the axe in the hand of the woodcutter," according to Derech Mitzvosecha*, on the mitzvah* of milah*. You will also consult Likkutei Torah* Behar, p. 38b.

B) The Jewish people receive all their strengths, including in material domains, from holiness, that is, from a place that is indeed subject to Hashem. For "His people is part of Him," as Iggeres HaTeshuvah*, ch. 6, and Derech Mitzvosecha*, at the same reference, explain.

C) Certain Jews can sometimes draw their vitality from the forces of evil and of "the other side," because they do "that which is evil in the eyes of Hashem." It is so only in a passing manner, as Kuntres uMaayan*, in the seventh discourse, says.

D) The other nations receive their strengths from the external part of the Divine Will, which vivifies "the other side," where Divinity does not illuminate evidently, but conceals itself. They consequently have a deep consciousness of their own existence.

Moreover, these two facts are linked, as Kuntres uMaayan* notes in discourses 2 and 3. Such is therefore the source of the vitality of the nations. It is for this reason that it is not forbidden to them to believe that the celestial bodies possess a certain power, although accessory to that of Hashem, while such a belief is forbidden to Israel, "the people who are close to Him."

With my blessing and in expectation of your good news,
