Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2003 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 7 · Letter 137

By the grace of Hashem,

6 Shevat 5713,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I duly received your two letters, the first of which was undated and the second of 2 Shevat. I reply to your questions:

A) As you yourself say in your correspondence, the bris milah* of the children should be performed, according to what my father-in-law, the Rebbe, explained to you at the time, when they are in perfect health. If you are not sure, if you have the slightest doubt about this, it is preferable to postpone it until the next day or the day after.

As you know, the Rambam* says, at the end of the third chapter of the laws of milah*, according to the interpretation given by the Tzofnas Paneach* of this text[1], that one which is delayed has retroactive value.

B) You ask me whether the bris milah* can be postponed until it can be performed for the two boys at the same time[2]. I do not understand the reason for it. It must be done, for the first, when he is in good health, and for the second, when he is in turn, even if it is not on the same date.

C) You ask me whether there are particular days for setting a bris milah* when it has been delayed. I have heard nothing on this subject. Various texts indicate that this is not the case. In any event, the date should not be delayed without valid reason.

D) Concerning the names[3] you are thinking of giving to your sons, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, used to say that he did not pronounce on this question. One can understand it from the explanation, found in the writings of the Arizal*, according to which Hashem inspires the father and the mother with the name corresponding to the neshamah* of the child.

You will therefore give them the names you will have chosen, with your wife, and they will have long days and good years, materially and spiritually.

E) You will kindly transmit my mazal tov* blessing to your wife, the rebbetzin*. I also extend my blessing, to you and to her jointly, that you bring your sons into the covenant of our father Avraham at a good and fruitful moment.

As you will have them enter into this covenant, you will also guide them, as well as your other son, toward Torah, the chuppah*, and good deeds. You will educate them in good health and in abundance.

With my mazal tov* blessing,

Notes

[1] Of the Rambam.
