Igrot Kodesh · Letter 200 — Resurrection of the Dead — Soul and Body Perfection
Volume 2 · Letter 32
[Summer 5700[1]]
You pose me the following question[2]:
"Can you explain in what manner the resurrection of the dead will take place — which is a fundamental principle of Jewish faith — given that certain aspects of it are not clearly defined?
Furthermore, one notion, in this regard, must be clarified. The eternity and immutability of the soul* are self-evident, since it is 'a veritable portion of Divinity,' intrinsically spiritual. The portion is thus similar to the Essence. Therefore, what utility does it have to relive in a physical body?"
Here is my answer. The greatest among our Sages* questioned themselves on these matters and their words are scattered across various texts. I shall cite here some of their words, with explanations that will allow us to respond to the questions posed.
But first, one must consider the objection of those who ask why one engages with such subjects at all. Why not simply say, each day, that we believe with complete faith in the resurrection of the dead? And this objection is supported, in their view, by the words of the Rambam*, who states: "You will find few explanations relating to the world to come. One must indeed ask how to reach the summit of the good, and distinguish that summit from the actions that allow one to attain it. On the other hand, the questions asked by the people — that is, will the dead revive naked or clothed, will there be rich and poor — have no 'interest'."
It is clear that the Rambam* does not condemn the people's questions, since the greatest of Israel ask them as well, in the Talmud* and in the Midrash*. In fact, he laments that people do not inquire about the world to come properly speaking, about the nature of the resurrection of the dead, and that they content themselves with questions of detail. And the Rambam* does not understand that the world to come — which, according to him, is reserved solely for souls and follows after the resurrection — "has been entirely forgotten."
I shall therefore respond to these questions, in my humble opinion, in order of importance, addressing the second before the first.
* * *
1. How can we establish that the resurrection of the dead will be experienced by the soul* clothed in a body, and in what way is the presence of this body so important[3]?
To understand this, we shall first define what the resurrection of the dead is, which will allow us to grasp why the soul* must relive precisely in a body.
The resurrection manifests in two ways within human existence:
A. On one hand, it is the perfection of the human species.
B. On the other hand, it is the retribution for conduct in accordance with the Will of Hashem.
* * *
In reality, both of these formulations are accurate. For man, just as every created being, receives the possibility of ascending the rungs of perfection. He must direct all his efforts toward this objective, which the Torah* and mitzvot* allow him to attain, as we shall demonstrate.
When man touches perfection to the full extent of his means, Hashem comes to his aid so that he surpasses his capacities. And our Sages* say, in tractate Yoma* 39a, that "when a man sanctifies himself even a little here below, in this world, he is granted considerable holiness on high, in the world to come."
In the language of the Zohar*, as it is taken up by Chabad* Chassidut*, the call of Hashem arouses the effort of man, and the latter brings about divine revelation, which answers him.
The retribution must be positive for the one who receives it, directly or through its intermediary.
The importance of the reward can therefore be evaluated in terms of the good that flows from it.
An example will illustrate our point. A laborer receives, in retribution for his work, bread and clothing. A disciple serves his master who, as a reward, teaches him wisdom. A student attaches himself to his master, and the master teaches him the purpose of his existence, the path he must follow to attain perfection.
Moral values are higher than material values. Eternal happiness surpasses both. It follows that the study of wisdom is a far greater retribution than bread. But the highest reward is access to the paths of eternal life.
One distinguishes different levels of goods, according to our perception or according to what surpasses it[4]. They all share one common point: the body or the soul* derives pleasure from them. Both are finite creatures and the pleasure is itself limited. Consequently, the reward is also limited.
The summit of elevation is man's fulfillment of the mitzvot* of his Creator. The latter thereby receives elevation and perfection. The mitzvah* binds him to the One Who commanded its practice, the Creator Who transcends all limitation. The relationship between the creature and the Creator is the most perfect good, which nothing else can surpass.
Consequently, the practice of the mitzvah* is the highest reward there is, as our Sages* explain when they say that "the reward of the mitzvah* is the mitzvah* itself"[5].
* * *
Through an effect of His goodness, Hashem indicates precisely to man how to attain perfection. This is set out in the Torah*, which shares the same etymology as Horaa*, instruction. The Torah* takes charge of his existence from the very first moment of life.
Indeed, the perfection of each being is relative and evaluated according to the mission for which it was created.
Hashem created the world[6] in general, and man in particular, because He desired[7] to dwell here below. Thus, those who are low in their level — though, in relation to Hashem, the notions of low and high have no meaning — those who possess material existence can submit themselves to Him. Thereupon, the Light of Hashem illuminates them.
This submission is the foundation and the ultimate stage of the Torah* and the mitzvah*, as it is written (Devarim* 6:24): "Hashem commanded us to practice all these Laws in order to fear Him"[8]. That is why the Torah* and mitzvot* are fulfilled here below, by means of material objects, by a soul* clothed in a physical body. Thus, matter submits to spirit and becomes a vessel for the Divinity.
Hashem asks man to act according to his strengths and his possibilities. Thereupon, he advances by stages, moving from the simpler toward the more complex. The same applies to the qualities he acquires, little by little, to the elevation that is, gradually, his. When he is granted a reward, he is also given the strength to receive it. He is refined, gradually prepared for the revelation of spirituality and for the disclosure of the Divinity, which is the true reward and which must be able to be ever more intense.
There were, however, exceptional situations in which an immense Light, utterly incomparable to the limits of the world, was revealed. This was the case, for example, at the time of the Exodus from Egypt or at the giving of the Torah*.
In general, creation tends toward fullness and perfection. However, at the present hour, the transformation must bear upon its lowest part, "the feet and the heels." Indeed, our Sages* say, in tractate Shabbat* 112b, that "if our ancestors were comparable to angels, then we ourselves are like men" — even though certain individuals may momentarily lose this quality[9]. How much more is this the case when someone intervenes who possesses free choice[10] and can therefore make the wrong decision. He then experiences a fall and loses the level that was previously his. Then, teshuvah* will bring him back, along with everything that pertains to him, toward his previous situation or even beyond it. Nevertheless, all of this remains hidden at the present hour and will only be revealed in the world to come.
In broad terms, three periods are defined: this world, the messianic era*, and that of the resurrection. This world is the theater of the struggle between matter and spirit, good and evil, as it is said "one nation strengthens itself against the other." Sometimes the good is victorious, other times the contrary is true.
During the messianic era*, the children of Israel will have reached the end of the battle, will have separated the good from the evil, and brought elevation to that good. They will therefore leave the exile* and attain the perfection of the human species that they knew before the sin of the tree of knowledge of good and evil[11]. Indeed, they will no longer be under the sway of good and evil.
However, the domain of evil will still exist in the world and among the nations. It follows that Jews will suffer. Their fullness will be affected thereby, and those who live during the messianic era* will therefore have to die, in order to rise again at the resurrection, as we shall demonstrate.
Such, then, is the perfection to which man can aspire through his own efforts — the reward given to him in accordance with his accomplishments.
During this messianic era*, men will ascend the rungs of perfection in accordance with what they accomplish. Then, it will still be possible to act[12]. Moreover, it will even be the essential moment for the action allowing one to attain the highest fullness[13].
Then, after the resurrection, impurity will disappear definitively from the earth. There will no longer be sin, no longer death. The Holy One, blessed be He, will abolish the evil inclination*, which is the angel of death. It is then that the human species will know perfection — not only to the measure of its effort and according to the retribution accorded to it, but above all through a gift from Hashem.
It is for this reason that the mitzvot* will be abolished in the world to come, after the resurrection[14]. Then, "the righteous* will sit, bearing a crown upon their heads, and they will perceive the radiance of the Divinity." The precise meaning of this statement is explained elsewhere[15], but this elaboration is not the object of our present discussion.
The reward will then be obtained here below, by a soul* clothed in a body, and it will be the fullness of material existence — that for which the world was created from the outset. It will become a Sanctuary for Hashem.
* * *
Here, then, is what can be said about the messianic era* and the resurrection of the dead from the perspective of the perfection of the human species. We must now define them from the perspective of the perception of the Divine, of the revelation of the heavenly Light, which one will understand and feel.
One must therefore understand all of this[16], as it is said (Iyov* 19:26): "From my flesh I shall behold the Divine." And our Sages* emphasize, in tractate Berachot* 10a, that "the soul* fills the body, just as the Holy One, blessed be He, fills the world."
Indeed, there are two forms of the vitality of the soul*, which animates the body:
A) One adapts to the specific character of each organ and enters into it, fitting itself within its limitations. Thus, the intellect resides in the head and the power of walking is found in the foot.
B) The other — the will — spreads throughout the whole body, without adapting to each of its limbs, without penetrating deeply into them, but surrounding them.
Another level transcends both of these forms simultaneously. It is the soul* itself, a singular spiritual quintessence, which undergoes no limitation.
Man, victim of the veil imposed upon him by the physical body, cannot perceive the essence of spirituality — including that which he carries within himself, that is, the soul* and the forces it possesses — which he can certainly sense deeply, but only in their effects, in the manifestation of their existence.
What has just been said applies, in the same way, to the infinite Light of Hashem:
A) On one hand, it fills the worlds, into which a reflection of the Divine Presence enters, adapting itself to the various stages of the chain of worlds.
B) On the other hand, it surrounds the worlds, and although it is, strictly speaking, present within them, it does not adapt to them, but merely encircles them.
Transcending both these stages, there is the Essence of Hashem, which has nothing whatsoever in common with these worlds.
These levels receive very numerous forms and I shall limit myself here to a general exposition, introducing only the notions that are necessary to our discussion.
In this material and coarse world, it is impossible for us to perceive the Light of Hashem, as the image previously stated demonstrates. We do not even discern the essence of the divine Light — including that which fills the worlds. Nevertheless, its effects allow us to know and establish its existence, as it is said (Yeshayahu* 40:26): "Lift your eyes toward the heavens and see Who created all this."
In the Gan Eden*, the world of souls* that no longer suffer the veil imposed by the body, it is possible to sense the Light that surrounds the worlds.
Then, during the messianic era*, matter will have been refined and every man will evidently bear the image of Hashem — as was the case before the sin of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, or even in a still higher manner. Thereupon, it will be possible to perceive the Light that surrounds the worlds.
The summit will be reached after the resurrection of the dead. That will then be the highest fullness of this world, in which the Essence of Hashem will be revealed.
Having set forth the meaning of the resurrection of the dead, we shall now specify its various aspects, in accordance with the explanations given by our Sages* on this subject.
* * *
2. Here is a definition of the resurrection of the dead.
Its time. The Mishnah* teaches that the reconstruction of the Temple* will precede the ingathering of the exiles[17], which will occur before the resurrection. This is also what the Zohar* says.
Its place. The souls* of the dead — whether buried in the Holy Land or outside it — will be reunited with their bodies in Eretz Yisrael*.
How can this be established? Tractate Ketubot* 111a teaches: "Rabbi Elazar* said: the dead buried outside of Eretz Yisrael* will not revive, for this resurrection can only take place in a land bearing My seal. Can Rabbi Elazar* actually hold that these dead would not revive? According to Rabbi Ilaa*, he means that their bodies will roll toward Eretz Yisrael* and there they will revive. But will this not result in pain for the righteous*? Abbaye* explains: Tunnels will be dug for them, underground, to lead them to Eretz Yisrael*[18], where they will emerge from the earth."
Thus, since the righteous* buried outside of Eretz Yisrael* will revive, it must be concluded that, according to Rabbi Elazar*, the resurrection will occur not at the place of death and burial, but precisely in Eretz Yisrael*. Consequently, the dead who will have arrived there through the tunnels can also be considered as though they had been buried in that land, for it is there that their soul* will enter their body, as we shall demonstrate.
It follows that the place of burial does not appear to be determinative for the resurrection, and one can conclude that even according to Rabbi Elazar*'s view, those who were buried outside of Eretz Yisrael* will revive as well. The Shnei Luchot HaBrit* develops this same view. Nevertheless, tunnels will be dug for the righteous*, to spare them any suffering — which is not said regarding the others. In any case, all will come to the Holy Land, where they will be considered as dead of Eretz Yisrael*, and there they will revive[19].
Thus, Rabbi Elazar* adopts the view of the Mishnah* according to which "all Jews have a portion in the world to come," and one can thereby respond to the question raised by tractate Sotah* 5a.
In tractate Ketubot*, Rabbi Abba bar Mamal* disputes Rabbi Elazar*'s opinion and affirms that one will also revive outside of Eretz Yisrael*. Nevertheless, several other Sages in that passage adopt Rabbi Elazar*'s position or argue on the basis of it. It must be concluded that this position is retained by the halachah*[20], in accordance with the established principles of Talmudic* interpretation[21].
Who will have a portion in the resurrection? All Jews will have a portion in the world to come, that is, in the resurrection. Tractate Sanhedrin* 90a excludes one who rejects the definition, as given by the Torah*, of this notion of resurrection. The Rambam* treats this question at length.
One should also consult the "responses and clarifications" section of the present issue[22], as well as issues 6 and 7, whose explanations I shall not repeat[23].
Souls that have known a previous life and bodies. The Zohar* raises the following question: "Rabbi Chizkiya* said: If all the bodies of the world rise up and come out of the earth, what will become of those whose soul* previously inhabited another body?" The Ari Zal* explains: "In the course of its first life, a soul* may not have fulfilled the mission entrusted to it. That body will therefore revive with the portion of the soul* that found elevation within it. Subsequently, that soul* will have known a second life to repair what was lacking in the first, and the second body will therefore revive with the second portion of the soul*"[24].
Thus, several persons will then possess a portion of a soul* and not an entire soul*, but this is nothing surprising.
Indeed, it must be known that a portion of the soul* carries within it everything that constitutes it, and for this reason it can exist autonomously, while still remaining a portion of a larger soul*[25].
Moreover, all souls* are themselves only portions of the soul* of Adam*, the first man, as our Sages* indicate, by allusion, in the Midrash* Shemot Rabbah*. It is for this reason that during the formation of Adam*'s body, the Holy One, blessed be He, was able to show him all the righteous* who were to descend from him, designating those who depended from his head or from his hair. See chapters 2 and 37 of the Tanya*, chapter 7 of Iggeret HaKodesh*, and other texts as well.
In what manner will the resurrection take place? The Midrash* Bereishit Rabbah* says: "Man will return as he departed. If he was blind, deaf, or mute, he will return thus. If he was clothed, he will return thus. The Holy One, blessed be He, says: Let them return as they departed, and I — I will heal them."
What does "if he was clothed" mean? The Yerushalmi* Ketubot* says: "It was taught in the name of Rabbi Natan* that the garment with which a man descends to Gehinnom* will ascend with him." The Tosafot*, in tractate Ketubot* 11b, specify: "There is a dispute on this matter. According to Rabbi*, the dead will revive in the garments they were accustomed to wear during their lifetime"[26].
The Zohar* says: "When the Jews rise from the dust, there will be among them many who are lame and many who are blind. Then the Holy One, blessed be He, will cause the sun to shine to heal them." Similarly, in tractate Nedarim* 8b, our Sages* say: "Hashem will extract the sun from its sheath and the righteous* will be healed."
In what order will the resurrection unfold. The Yerushalmi* Kilayim* and the Zohar* say: "The dead of Eretz Yisrael* will revive first, then will come those of the other countries[27]. After that, it will be the generation of the desert[28] and, according to one view, the Patriarchs*. Rabbi Shimon* says: There will first be the dead of Eretz Yisrael*, then those of the other countries, and finally those who rest in Chevron*[29]."
The Avkat Rochel* explains why the Patriarchs* will revive last. Indeed, they will immediately be filled with joy, seeing that their children have left their tombs, that the land is filled with righteous* and virtuous men.
According to the Zohar*, the righteous* will revive first, then the other men will follow. Torah* scholars will revive first, then it will be the turn of those who distinguish themselves by their practice of mitzvot*. The Midrash* reports that the dead will revive and be called in alphabetical order of their names. It specifies, however, that the most humble will revive first.
The contemporaries of the resurrection. Rabbi Saadya Gaon* observes that the verses of the Torah* and the teachings of our Sages* say nothing about those who will be alive at the time of the resurrection. That is why several views exist on this matter.
But at the present hour, the Zohar* has been revealed to us, which says: "Until then, death will be the result of the grip of the forces of evil. But at that time, it will be the application of the verse 'It is I Who give death and life.' At that time, all those who will not yet have experienced death will therefore receive it from Hashem and they will revive immediately. Why so? In order that nothing of the impurity of the world shall remain, in order that a new world be built, the work of the Hands of the Holy One, blessed be He"[30].
The details of the resurrection. It is the same body that will revive, since it is written "your dead will revive" and not "your dead will be recreated." Indeed, a bone[31] of the body is immutable, and at the resurrection, Hashem will soften it with dew. It will then become like dough, and it is from it that the body can be rebuilt. This is what the Zohar* explains, 2:28b and 3:169a.
Will there be a judgment after the resurrection? In response to this question, three views are found:
1. After the resurrection, there will be the "day of the great judgment." Then each man will be judged according to his actions. This is in particular the view of the Ramban* in his Sha'ar HaGemul*.
2. Each man is judged immediately after his death. There will therefore be no need to provide for another judgment after the resurrection. Certainly, various texts allude to the "great judgment" that will take place during that period. But one must understand this expression as alluding to punishment, to chastisement[32]. Such is the view of Rabbi Yitzchak Abravanel* in his Mayanei HaYeshu'ah*, eighth source, seventh palm.
3. The Ari Zal* says: "You might pose the following question. This soul* has been atoned for by Yom Kippur*, has suffered afflictions that completed this atonement. Then it has known subsequent lives. Why, after all this, should it be judged once more? One must conclude that the 'day of great judgment' concerns only the other nations."
The Nishmat Chayyim* cites this passage of the Ari Zal* and adds: "And what will become of those who died shortly before the resurrection and have not yet expiated their sins through reincarnation or through suffering? I shall answer that in all logic, the date at which their judgment will occur will mean that instead of receiving a punishment applying over a long period, they will be inflicted with a particularly heavy one, whose gravity will substitute for its duration. Thus they will also have a portion in the world to come. But all these notions remain profoundly hidden, and happy is the one who has knowledge of them."
He also examines the various views previously cited, the proofs that can be brought in their support, and the objections that can be raised. The Midrash Talpiyot* reports these explanations.
Life after the resurrection. In the world to come, after the resurrection[33], one will not eat and one will not drink. There will be no more births, no more commercial activity, no more jealousy, no more hatred, no more rivalry. The righteous*[34] will sit, bearing a crown upon their heads, and they will perceive the radiance of the Divine Presence*, according to tractate Berachot* 17a. They will no longer die, according to tractate Sanhedrin* 92a, and will live eternally[35].

* * *
* * *
* * *
* * *
* * *
