Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1996 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 7 · Letter 130
By the grace of Hashem,
27 Teves 5713,
Brooklyn, New York,
To Mr. Yishai HaLevi Meyer,
Greetings and blessings,
I duly received your letter of 13 Teves. My secretariat does not write French[1] and my reply is therefore composed in Hebrew. The few words of this language appearing in your correspondence indicate that you read and understand it.
A) You raise the conception that Torah and traditional Judaism have of the theory of evolution. You presumably allude to the theory of Darwin, or perhaps to that of Lamarck, the latter, unlike the former, considering that evolution proceeds by jumps[2].
The conception of the Torah is quite clear. One of the reasons for which it is a mitzvah* to rest during the seventh day, each week, is the fact that "in six days, Hashem made the heavens and the earth. On the seventh day, He ceased His work and rested." One can conclude from this that the six days of creation are indeed days, in the most literal sense, and not epochs, as some claim.
Various texts of our Sages permit establishing that this is so. The days of creation indeed had twenty-four hours. You will consult on this subject Pirkei deRabi Eliezer*, beginning from chapter 3, the Midrash Rabbah Bereishis*, Tractate Sanhedrin* 38b, and other references as well.
B) The account of creation also specifies in what order it was carried out, what was introduced on the third day, then the fourth, the fifth, and the sixth. Thus, each species was indeed created in an independent manner. The plain sense of the verse affirms that the earth produced vegetation, fish, snakes, birds, wild beasts, domestic animals. It is only afterward that man was created. There was therefore no evolution from one species to another.
Note: You know the explanations found in various seforim*, in particular the Maamar Or HaChaim* which you yourself cite in your letter, establishing a relation with the theory of evolution. Nevertheless, whoever analyzes these seforim* and these texts will perceive that they were composed without deep knowledge of the content of this theory, but only with a precise goal, which is that of apologetic works, the desire to demonstrate to the nations of the world that their ideas and conceptions also appear in the sacred texts and in the words of our Sages.
Those who composed these seforim* themselves recognize that they formulated in them an interpretation difficult to accept and proposed only out of necessity[3]. They considered that it was their duty to compose a text permitting the world to have a more positive view of our holy Torah. But they well knew that their interpretation was not the correct one.
Who is, for us, greater than the Rambam*, about whom our Sages affirm: "From Moshe to Moshe[4], none arose comparable to Moshe"? Now, whoever consults his book, the Yad HaChazakah*, can verify that the ideas which he develops in his Moreh Nevuchim*, in particular the explanation he gives of the mitzvos*, do not reflect the conception which he had of the Torah.
The same holds for several philosophers belonging to Jewish orthodoxy, of the Middle Ages and of the present time. They thought to sanctify the Name of Hashem by distorting the words of our Sages to adapt them to scientific theories, thinking thereby to revalue them in the eyes of various Jewish circles or even of the other nations.
I will also cite another example. One knows the hesitations of the Gedolei Yisrael* in interpreting the verses describing the revolutions of the sun and the moon around the earth, which remains in its place, according to the theory of Copernicus, long considered to be the absolute truth, before the theory of relativity of Einstein proved that science is, in fact, incapable of demonstrating anything for all that concerns the relation of the celestial bodies to the earth. It cannot determine which planet is making a revolution and which other is immobile.
Consequently, it is indeed conceivable[5] that the earth is immobile and that the stars revolve around it. Obviously, this conclusion is adopted by science only as a function of its present knowledge[6]. There is therefore no need to extract the verses from their plain sense, to accept difficult and improbable interpretations.
It is the same for all the words of our Sages, which must be interpreted in the most literal sense.
C) To return to the theory of evolution itself, you know in what manner science forges a hypothesis. The latter responds to the necessity of explaining a situation or a difficulty that one can observe in practice. It must, moreover, be based on what nature and the senses permit verifying.
In other words, a scientific hypothesis aims to explain an event difficult to interpret by appealing to notions and developments emanating from nature itself and permitting an easier understanding of it. But it is, above all, necessary that one be able to verify its conclusions empirically, in order to determine their adequacy to reality.
The same holds for the matter at hand. Some have asked themselves how the various species that nature counts were created and what is their origin, whether minerals, vegetation, animals, or humans. They thought to evade this question by imagining that there were, originally, primitive beings and that then other creatures, more complex, gradually developed, among which man made his appearance.
For such a conception to be qualified as scientific, it must satisfy several conditions, in particular the following:
1) The evolution from a primitive being to a complex being must find its equivalent in natural phenomena. One must find at least one trustworthy man capable of testifying that he has been able to observe, on various occasions, such an evolution.
Now, it is a clearly established fact that there does not even exist a single reliable testimony attesting that a certain species developed from another species. What has been seen and what Darwin himself recounts in his celebrated book are only slight adaptations of certain limbs[7].
Likewise, fossils have been found resembling species still living. It has been deduced that it was legitimate to think that the latter developed from the former. This is, in particular, the case for the species of doves or horses on which the theory of evolution is based.
2) The situation, as the theory of evolution describes it, must be easier to understand, easier to admit than the faith according to which everything was created from nothingness.
Now, there is no natural proof permitting establishing that it is easier to accept that man was originally a primitive being rather than to consider that he was created from nothingness. In other words, the explanation according to which a few atoms and a few molecules joined, in a single instance, to form a man is no less difficult to admit than the theory advancing that primitive cells underwent a progressive evolution and became limbs, each one having a different purpose, the brain which is found in the head, the eyeball, or the heel of the foot.
D) Certain species, among the most primitive vegetation or animals, have a particularly short life. Man can therefore observe the modifications of their body over several generations. Now, scientists have not yet succeeded in developing one species from another.
Scientists have only been able to modify, up to a certain point, the character of a plant, an animal, or to fuse two species to create a third, intermediate one. By contrast, they have never been capable of developing a complex species from a primitive species.
E) All scientists have accepted the principle according to which matter is immutable. To adopt a formulation more in conformity with the latest scientific developments, one would have to say that the combination of matter and energy is immutable.
According to this principle, one must admit that all atoms, with the totality of their constituent elements, were already present at the beginning of creation, or else that they have always existed, as the heretics claim.
Consequently, the theory of evolution leads one to affirm that all atoms were initially present, but were scattered. Subsequently, they curiously combined, in different ways, in particular conditions. Now, according to statistics and probabilities, the possibility of joining, in a single instance, all the necessary conditions, is practically nil.
Moreover, one would have to say, according to this theory, that these conditions, virtually impossible to bring together according to science, have nevertheless been brought together for millions or even billions of years. Now, evolution, throughout all this time, has always proceeded in the same direction, that is, from the most rudimentary toward the most elevated and most developed.
By contrast, from the point of view of the believer, it is possible to say that Hashem created all the atoms found in the world from nothingness. It is clear that the Creator can give life not only to rudimentary cells, but also to creatures possessing several million cells at once.
Note: Certain believers adhere to the theory of evolution, without which they encounter the following difficulty:
Why did Hashem create so many different species, the utility of which they do not understand?
But the theory of evolution does not permit setting aside their interrogation. Indeed, the Torah considers that the laws of nature also result from the Will of Hashem. Therefore, why did Hashem promulgate such laws, having permitted the creation of so many creatures which, according to those who question, have no utility?
F) The theory of evolution also raises other questions and other incomprehensions. In fact, several scientists contest it. See, for example, the books of Fleischmann or Schindewolf, the references to which are cited at the end of this letter. You will find in them a severe critique of this theory.
Moreover, you doubtless know that there are, in the theory of evolution, several contradictions, for example in the calculation of the age of the earth. Thus, a first calculation is established as a function of the quantity of salt in the ocean. Another is based on the quantity of radium, lead, and uranium that one discovers in a certain place. Still another takes into account the present situation of the sun. It is also established as a function of fossils and of the various strata constituting the soil.
Now, the results, depending on whether one adopts one method or the other, are radically different.
G) A remark must be made. If someone claimed that one species can now develop from another and that he had been a witness to it, he would in no way contradict religion and our faith, even if, as has been said, this would be a curious and extraordinary event, which no scientist could accept without having proof that it is so.
I was therefore introducing only the following idea. Creation was carried out in the manner described by our holy Torah. Thus, on the third day, the Word was realized according to which "the earth shall sprout vegetation… trees bearing fruit, according to their species." From the outset, each species was therefore separated from the other.
Our Sages say, in Tractate Chullin* 60b, that all this was created during the twelve hours[8] of the third day. And it was the same for the creation or suspension of the luminaries in the heavens, of the stars, during the fourth day, for the creation of the fish and birds on the fifth day, of the domestic animals and wild beasts on the sixth day.
I extend my blessing to you, as well as to your friends, that you advance, in a fruitful manner, on the path leading toward the house of Hashem, that is, that of Torah and mitzvos* accomplished concretely.

Letter from the Rebbe's secretariat, following the previous one
By the grace of Hashem,
28 Adar 5713,
Brooklyn, New York,
To Mr. Yishai HaLevi Meyer,
Greetings and blessings,
You doubtless have already received the letter of the Rebbe shlita*, dated 27 Teves. It is surprising that you did not acknowledge receipt of it. Nevertheless, the Rebbe shlita* wishes, above all, to know how the meeting went, what discussion was engaged in, in the course of it, on the problem of evolution and of the correspondences, and what its consequences were.
On this occasion, the Rebbe shlita* asked me to communicate to you the following. He has had knowledge of an article by Dr. C. B. Ulman, appearing in the journal Sinai, in Jerusalem, in 1943, vol. 12. This has just been reprinted in English in Encyclopedia of Biblical Interpretation, by Rav Menachem M. Kasher, appearing in New York in 1953.
This article cites a great number of scientists who have opposed the theory of evolution. Perhaps you do not possess this book and I therefore cite some of these scientists at the end of this letter.
At the request of the Rebbe shlita*, I will mention only the contemporaries and not those of the nineteenth century, who are also catalogued in this article.
With my respects and my blessing,

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF BIBLLICAL INTERPRETATION New York, 1953 להרב מנחם מ.
