By the grace of Hashem,

Greetings and blessings,

As you know, our Sages say that it is incumbent upon a person to act on his own, at least according to his own means. It is then that Hashem grants him fully His blessing, according to His own power. But one must take upon oneself, at least a small part of what is accomplished.

The formulation of our Sages on this is as follows. The Holy One, blessed be He, says to the Jewish people: "Open for Me like the point of a needle. Then I will open for you like the gateway of the Sanctuary." Thus, an opening the size of the point of a needle is sufficient. Once it is made, Hashem Himself opens the equivalent of the gateway of the Sanctuary that was in the Beis HaMikdash*.

The expressions of our Sages are particularly precise. In effect, the purpose of the point of a needle is not only to make an orifice allowing a thread to pass through. In fact, it is needed so that this thread joins two sides to make them one.

Such is precisely the purpose of man, who must make this small orifice by setting aside his desires and his cravings. When he has accomplished this, he will pass through it the thread of Torah and mitzvos*. In this way, he will unite matter and spirit. Thus, Hashem will grant him blessing and success, including in material matters.

May Hashem grant that you can put into practice the teaching of our Sages mentioned above, and that there be fulfilled in you the expression of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, according to which Hashem grants the Jewish people material goods so that they may make of them spirituality. And may you know abundance.

. . .ידוע מה שחז״ל אמרו לנו ,שהשי״ת רוצה שהאדם יעשה לפי

אפשרויותיו לכל הפחות ,ואז השי״ת נותן הרבה מאוד לפי הכוח שלו,

אבל את המעט הזה יש לעשות לבד.

הביטוי של חז״ל על כך הוא ,שהקב״ה אומר לישראל ,פתחו לי

כחודה של מחט ואני אפתח לכם כפתחו של אולם ,היינו שאם רק יפתחו

כפתח שעושה חוד -קצה -של מחט ,ואני -הקב״ה -אפתח לכם פתח

כפתח שערי האולם ,שהי׳ בבית המקדש.

הביטויים של חז״ל הם מאוד מדויקים ומדודים .תפקיד חודה של

מחט אינו רק עשיית נקב בו יוכל החוט לעבור ,אלא הכוונה בזה היא,

שהחוט יחבר שני דברים להיות אחד .כך גם בתעודת האדם לעשות נקב

קטן -ז״א לשים את תאוותיו ורצונותיו הצידה ,כדי שע״י נקב זה יוכל

למשוך את החוט של תורה ומצוות ,שבזה מקשר יהודי גשמיות עם

רוחניות ,ועל ידי זה נותן השי״ת ליהודי ברכה והצלחה גם בעניניו

הגשמיים.

והשי״ת יעזור לו שיקבל על עצמו לקיים מאמר זה כנזכר לעיל,

ויקויים בו פתגם רבנו הזקן בעל התניא והשו״ע ,שהשי״ת נותן ליהודים

גשמיות והם עושים מגשמיות רוחניות ,ושיהי׳ זה בהרחבה.
