Greetings and blessings,

I am replying to your letter of 13 Teves, by which you inform me that your son will be three years old on 24 Shevat. You ask me whether you may bring forward his upsherenish* to the day of the hilula*[1], 10 Shevat.

In accordance with Jewish custom, which is an integral part of Torah*, one does not cut a child's hair before he is three years old. This is therefore also what you will do, and this will take place at a good and fruitful moment. I enclose for you an extract of a letter from my father-in-law, the Rebbe, regarding the upsherenish*[2].

You tell me that you are anxious about your material livelihood. It would be good for you to give, every weekday, before davening*, a few coins to tzedakah*. Our Sages stress that one may give in order to be wealthy. Furthermore, Hashem says: "Test Me, please, in this matter."

Our later Sages report that, according to several poskim*, one may say the same about ordinary tzedakah*. You will consult, on this subject, Shulchan Aruch* Yoreh De'ah*, chapter 247, and its commentators. The various conceptions in this domain are cited in the Sdei Chemed*, Klalim, in the entry Nun, chapter 16.

It is surely unnecessary to remind you of the necessity of keeping the three studies that concern each one, instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, bearing on Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*. These are well known.

במענה על מכתבו מי"ג טבת, בו מודיע אשר לבנו... שי' ימלאו שלש שנים ביום כ"ד שבט הבע"ל ושואל אם להקדים האפשערעניש ליום ההילולא יו"ד שבט:

הנה ידוע מנהג ישראל תורה היא אשר האפשערעניש עושים לא קודם מיום מלאת שלש שנים להבן, ובמילא גם הוא ינהג ככה ויהי' בשעה טובה ומוצלחת, ומועתק בשולי הגליון קטע ממכתב כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר בענין האפשערעניש.

מה שכותב שדואג עתה בענין פרנסתו, הנה הי' מהנכון שיתן בכל יום - מימות החול - קודם התפלה איזה פרוטות לצדקה וידוע פסק רז"ל עשר בשביל שתתעשר וע"ז אומר הקב"ה בחנוני נא בזאת ומובא באחרונים שלדעת כמה פוסקים הנה גם על צדקה סתם נאמר הכתוב ובחנוני כו' יעוין שו"ע יו"ד סרמ"ז ובנ"כ שם ומובאות הדיעות בזה בשדי חמד כללים מערכת נ' ט"ז.

בטח למותר להעירו להתחזק בשמירת שלש השיעורים השוים לכל נפש מתקנת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר בחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים.
