To the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Greetings and blessings,

I read with pleasure in your letter that the spiritual dimension of the journey of the emissaries of the Sages[2] appeared evident. In fact, its material aspect must not be understood in the usual sense either. For all that, it is not comparable to the spirituality and to the feelings of those who participate in these chassidic farbrengens*.

I am indeed alluding to their feelings, for reflection could lead to a conclusion opposed to this. One who attends such a gathering takes part in its material aspect, and the Tanya* stresses, in chapter 37, that "one could have acquired with it that which would have ensured one's own livelihood"[3]. This participation has doubtless been with all his strength, with his entire personality.

It is not the same in the spiritual dimension. Intellectual understanding or the feeling of the heart leads to the awareness that there is here only a part and not the essence of the soul. For all that, it is clear that it is indeed so in the reality of things, but not in the perception of the participants.

A message[4] for the days of Chanukah* has been sent to you, with a letter from the secretariat. Doubtless you will make good use of it.

... נהניתי ממ"ש במכתבו, שהי' מורגש בנסיעה זו של השדרי"ם הרוחניות שבדבר, ואף שגם הגשמיות שבזה אינו גשמיות דעמא דבר, אבל בכ"ז קומט דאס ניט לענין רוחניות והרגשים של בע"ב המשתתפים בהתועדות, ומדגיש הנני בהרגשים, כי לו הי' מתבוננים הרי יש מקום לומר להיפך, כי כאשר המשתתף בהתועדות משתתף גם בגשמיות הענין אשר כמבואר בתניא פל"ז, הרי יכול לקנות בזה חיי נפשו, ובמשך הזמן בטח עשה בזה בכל כחותיו, הרי משתתף הוא כולו, משא"כ הרוחניות מקבל אם ע"י המוח שלו או ע"י הרגש הלב שאין זה אלא חלק וחלק לא מעצם הנפש, אבל מובן שכ"ז הוא מצד אמיתת הדבר ואינו כן אצל המתועדים...

נשלח במכ' המזכירות העתק מהמעסעדזש לימי חנוכה אשר בטח ישתמש בו באופן המתאים.
