Volume 7 · Letter 91

By the grace of Hashem,

23 Kislev 5713,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

On the occasion of the days of Chanukah*[1], which approach, for us and for all Israel, for good and blessing, I wish to recall to you one of the teachings that the lights of Chanukah* deliver in an allusive manner. It is the following.

For the Jewish people, several mitzvos* are linked to lights. There are those of the Beis HaMikdash*, those of Shabbos*, those of Chanukah*. The latter are distinguished from all the others, which are kindled while the sun still shines, periodically, according to a number that is always identical.

The lights of Chanukah*, on the other hand, are kindled after sunset, in increasing number from one day to the next. One adds, each time, one light, one candle. Now, the two situations are linked. When light reigns outside, one can be content with the ordinary clarity emanating from Torah* and mitzvos*. In a general way, this can be considered as sufficient. And the Torah* takes into account the majority situation.

On the contrary, when the sun no longer illuminates the surroundings in an obvious way, as it is said: "Hashem is a sun and shield"[2], one cannot be content to serve Hashem today as one did yesterday and tomorrow as today. For if such were the case, not only would one not vanquish the darkness, but, moreover, one would run the risk that it would infiltrate into the place that was until then luminous.

In such a situation, one must, every day, kindle one more light. Our Sages thus say that one must know how to ascend in matters of holiness — maalin bakodesh*. The meaning of all this is quite clear and has no need to be specified.

May Hashem grant success to each one of us, in order to illuminate his soul, his body, and the part of the world that is entrusted to him, in expansiveness.

With my blessing and my regards to all your friends, as well as to the members of their family and to their children,
