Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1953 — Tzedakah
Volume 7 · Letter 87
By the grace of Hashem,
Month of liberation 5713,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the Rav, great scholar, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,
of manifold knowledge, Rav Yosef[1],
Greetings and blessings,
I duly received your letter, following up on what was said at the chassidic farbrengen*[2]. As you write, I was referring, in saying that the days of the Nazir* must be considered independently, to the statement of our Sages reported in tractate Nazir 7a.
On the occasion of the festival days[3] which approach, for us and for all Israel, in a positive manner, I extend my blessing for a kosher* and joyous festival.
And may there be fulfilled the long-awaited promise according to which "as in the days of your departure from Egypt, I will show you wonders," at the time of our true and complete redemption, in your lifetime and in ours, through our righteous Moshiach*.
With my respects and my blessing on the occasion of the festival,
M. Schneerson,
Concerning time, the question posed was the following[4]. Is it a single point, or is it a collection of instants, the subsequent ones completing the first? You will consult, in this regard, the Tzofnas Paneach* of the Rav of Rogatchov, second edition, pages 26a and 89a.
You advance that it is fitting to distinguish the time of Shabbos*, basing yourself on tractate Krisos 16a[5]. One may inquire on this subject, for the rupture is made by days to which they[6] do not apply. One may cite, on the other hand, the Tosafos Yeshanim, in tractate Yoma 81a, the responsa Tzofnas Paneach* to which I previously alluded, vol. 2, chapter 32. This point will not be detailed here.
You will also consult the Torah Or* Toldos, page 18d, which speaks of "a day that is long from its beginning."
Notes
[1] Rav Y. Blumenfeld.
[2] Of 19 Kislev, in the course of which the Rebbe asked whether time can be defined as a point or as a collection of instants. Thus, for the Nazir, each day must be considered independently, and one may ask what is the case for the month of Kislev or for the meaning to be given to the expression "have a kosher and joyous festival." See, in this regard, letter no. 2092.
[3] Of Chanukah*.
[4] In this regard, see also letter no. 673.
[5] To demonstrate that the days separating one Shabbos from another constitute an interruption that allows them to be distinguished from one another.
[6] The laws of Shabbos.
