By the grace of Hashem,

22 Kislev 5713,

Brooklyn,

To the distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and

devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Moshe HaKohen[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I was pleased to have news of you through the emissaries, the great rabbanim*, chassidim* who fear Hashem and devote themselves faithfully to communal needs, Rav S. L.[2] and Rav E. S.[3], all the more so since you parted from one another in the course of a chassidic and brotherly farbrengen*.

In such a case, the separation is solely geographic. It is therefore not real, as several letters of my father-in-law, the Rebbe[4], explain, establishing that thought transcends space and even time. Furthermore, it can transform a person and elevate him to a place and a moment to which he is physically a stranger.

One may cite, in this regard, the explanation given by the Baal Shem Tov of the verse "the Serafim* stood above Him." For how can angels be higher than "Hashem sitting upon a lofty Throne"? Is not the world of angels lower than that of the Throne, as different works of Kabbalah*, Chassidus*, and philosophy explain?

The Baal Shem Tov therefore explains that a being is found where his will is. The Serafim*[5] are so called because they are consumed by their love and their desire to be included in and to ascend even higher than the world of the Throne.

I have good hope that you will organize a chassidic farbrengen* for one of the days of Chanukah*, and perhaps even during several days of this festival. May Hashem grant that all this be fruitful.
