Greetings and blessings,
I am replying to your letter of Rosh Chodesh* Kislev, in which you tell me that a doctor recommends an eye operation for you.
It is doubtless unnecessary to stress for you the precautions necessary for reciting Kiddush* and Havdalah*[1], which condition the clarity of one's eyes. Likewise, you will multiply your efforts in order to honor the Torah* and those who study it.
It is said, indeed, that "a mitzvah* is a candle and the Torah* is light." And Hashem acts "measure for measure"[2]. Consequently, He strengthens and reinforces the clarity of the eyes. You will set fixed times of study of the revealed part of Torah and of Chassidus*, its esoteric dimension, in expansiveness and good health.

במענה על מכתבו מר"ח כסלו, בו כותב אשר רופא מייעצו לעשות נתוח לעינו...
בטח למותר להעירו להזהר בקידוש ובהבדלה שזה נוגע למאור עיניו של אדם וכן בתוספת אומץ בענינים של כבוד התורה ולומדי' והוא ע"פ מ"ש כי נר מצוה ותורה אור, ומדתו של הקב"ה מדה כנגד מדה לחזק ולהוסיף במאור עיניו. ויקבע שיעורים בתורת הנגלה ובתורת החסידות הסוד מתוך הרחבה ובריאות הנכונה.
