Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1946 — Health
Volume 7 · Letter 80
By the grace of Hashem,
20 Kislev 5713,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
I am replying to your letter of 16 Kislev and to the request for a blessing it contained, which I shall read when I find myself near the holy tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us.
You say in your letter that you have not received an answer on various points concerning you, and you complain of this. I have already written about this to one of your friends[1], and it would be good if he would convey to you at least the content of my letter.
I explained therein that progress in the realm of holiness is gradual, that it requires effort. You cannot therefore expect Hashem to perform a miracle for you and to transform you in an instant from one extreme to the other, without effort on your part.
Moreover, our holy Torah* also gives the assurance that effort is fruitful. Furthermore, Hashem has given you the merit to study "the words of the living Hashem," that is, the teaching of Chassidus*[2]. You surely do not bring to this study all the necessary ardor, but in any case, a little light suffices to push away much darkness. It is therefore useless to rebel, and you must preserve your physical health. The Rambam* specifies that this is one of the means of serving Hashem.
You will therefore approach, little by little, the service of Hashem, without being affected if the effort seems only transient. Indeed, there is a simple solution to such a situation. One must put all one's ardor into studying particularly Chassidus*, which awakens the love and fear of Hashem.
Obviously, all this must not call into question the order of the yeshivah* in which you find yourself[3]. You will accomplish all this after taking the counsel of those who direct it.
With my blessing that you study Torah* permeated with yiras shamayim*,
