To the Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Greetings and blessings,

I was satisfied to receive the candles, on the occasion of the festival of Chanukah. Chassidus* explains that the numerical value of the word ner[2] is equal to the two hundred forty-eight Injunctions of the Torah, plus love and fear of Hashem. You will consult, on this subject, the Zohar, vol. 2, p. 166b, and the Likkutei Torah, at the beginning of the second discourse entitled "And you shall have tzitzis*."

In consequence, may Hashem strengthen the two hundred forty-eight members of your body through the practice of the two hundred forty-eight mitzvos*, the accomplishment of which must be based on love and fear of Hashem in order to be effective, as the fourth chapter of the Tanya explains.

On the occasion of the festival of liberation[3] which is approaching, I enclose for you the sequence of chassidic* discourses of 5703[4], in which figures the discourse entitled: "Thus speaks the Eternal, My salvation is near," which I have advised every chassid* to teach to his entourage on 19 Kislev, 20 Kislev, and for the fifth light of Chanukah.

The essential is that all this be followed by a concrete effect. Our Sages decide, indeed, that "action is essential and not commentary." One must therefore persuade to put into practice the terms of this chassidic* discourse. From then on, Hashem gives the assurance that "My salvation is near and My hope will reveal itself promptly."

בנועם נמסרו לי הנרות בקשר עם ימי חנוכה הבע"ל, ויה"ר מהשי"ת אשר ע"פ המבואר בדא"ח (יעוין זח"ב קסו, ב. לקו"ת רד"ה והי' לכם לציצית (השני)) אשר נר, הוא בגימטריא רמ"ח מ"ע ודו"ר שבאדם, הנה יזכהו השי"ת להשפיע גם בהרמ"ח שלו, היינו קיום המצות שיהי' הקיום מיוסד על הדו"ר, שאז הוא קיום אמיתי, וכמ"ש בתניא פ"ד.

ולקראת חג הגאולה הבע"ל הנה מצו"פ המשך מאמרי תש"ג אשר המאמר ד"ה כה אמר ה' גו' קרובה ישועתי לבוא, הצעתי לאנ"ש שי' ללמדו בימי י"ט וכ' כסלו ונר חמישי דחנוכה הבע"ל כאו"א בסביבתו, והעיקר להביא לפו"מ כפסק רז"ל אשר לא המדרש עיקר אלא המעשה, היינו להשפיע בהם שיקיימו האמור בהמאמר הנ"ל ואז מובטחים אנו מהשי"ת אשר קרובה ישועתי לבוא ותקותי להגלות.
