Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1940 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 7 · Letter 74 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem,
16 Kislev 5713,
Brooklyn
To the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem
and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Ephraim Eliezer HaCohen[1],
Greetings and blessings,
I received, with pleasure, your letter, reporting the account of the Maggid, Rabbi Yisrael of Kozhnitz[2]. This is particularly precious, all the more so as it concerns a Tzaddik, a master of Chassidus*. In fact, the masters of Chassidus* have underlined the importance of such accounts, which present these Tzaddikim and convey the soul, "the soul of the soul" of the Torah.
Now, the Holy One blessed be He acts "measure for measure"[3], and these Tzaddikim therefore personally have the merit that their own accounts, even if they seem to be only a garment covering the body, can illuminate "the soul of the soul." As you know, according to the Zohar, vol. 3, p. 152a, this expression alludes both to Chayah[4] and to Yechidah[5].
The following question was posed to you[6]. On Rosh Hashanah, the profound dimension of vitality receives an elevation. This is what is called "the elevation of the lights," in the Sefer HaMaamarim 5703[7], on p. 38. On this subject, you will also consult Iggeres HaKodesh, at chapter 14. During Shabbos, by contrast, it is the external dimension of vitality which elevates itself. This is then "the elevation of the receptacles," as the Kuntres Acharon of the Tanya indicates, on p. 157b. From then on, you were asked, from what stage of creation does the vitality emanate when Rosh Hashanah is a Shabbos[8]?
In fact, a similar question can be posed regarding every Shabbos. The superficial part of vitality then knows elevation. In consequence, why is the world not modified by it?
One can deduce the response to this question from an exchange which took place between the Tzemach Tzedek and his grandfather, the Alter Rebbe. Indeed, the Tzemach Tzedek writes, in his Sefer HaMitzvos, at the end of the mitzvah* of not lighting fire during Shabbos, that the elevation of this day bears upon the profound force which the food contains. It is the reason for which no external change results from it.
One can conclude from it that the superficial elevation of Shabbos bears, in fact, upon the profound part of the superficial aspect. Obviously, an external observer will see no change, for materiality draws its vitality from a source which is not modified. It is therefore the same when Rosh Hashanah is a Shabbos.
Moreover, you know that the profound dimension and the superficial stage count, the one and the other, numerous levels, as the Etz Chaim, first gate, second leaf, and Iggeres HaKodesh at chapter 29 say: "The one is the brain of the other and the other is the bark of the one." There are domains of general bearing and others more specific.
One can thus understand that, when a festival takes place in the middle of the week, it effectively conserves a character of weekday, and one says then[9]: "This is today the first day of the week," "This is today the second day of the week." For each day possesses a specific content. In parallel, this is indeed a festival, having a general bearing, which concerns the entire year.
By the way, certain celebrations are linked to the date in the month. It is for this that one speaks of Rosh Chodesh[10], a day which reveals a collective vitality, for the entire month, which then inserts itself into the days that constitute it, in the manner which is necessary to each one of them.
You will also consult the Nahar Shalom, which is printed at the end of the Etz Chaim, edited in Warsaw in 5651[11], p. 39c, in the paragraphs beginning with "It is known what the Rav writes" and "Thus, each day." You will also see the references cited by this text, in the notes and the commentaries. You will find there the basis of all that has just been said.
I enclose for you a fascicle[12] which has just appeared. It is a text of the Rebbe Rashab, and you will doubtless place it at the disposal of the largest number. In fact, this text explains that the nourishment of the Kohanim*[13] is more elevated than the consumption of a sacrifice, for it brings into evidence a new light, transcending the chain of the worlds.
With my blessing on the occasion of the festival of liberation[14],

[3] To the measure of the effort of men toward Him. In this case, it is the same for the Tzaddikim, who are "in the image of their Creator."
[4] Fourth part of the Jewish soul, which only reveals itself on exceptional occasions, for example during prophetic disclosure. This is the first stage of comprehension and induces a profound submission.
[5] Essence of the Jewish soul, which is also its fifth part, directly linked to the Essence of Hashem. It constitutes, properly speaking, the parcel of Hashem residing in the physical body.
