Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1933 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 7 · Letter 67

By the grace of Hashem,

9 Kislev 5713,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

A) I respond to your letter of 29 Cheshvan, in which you indicate to me in what manner your studies are organized, at the Yeshivah Lubavitch. It is difficult for you to study two Talmudic tractates at once, and you ask my opinion to determine which one you should pursue the study of.

You have the merit of finding yourself at the yeshivah*, and different Midrashim of our Sages underline the importance of public study[1]. This is one of the forty-eight means of acquiring the Torah[2], and you will consult, on this subject, chapter 23 of Iggeres HaKodesh, of the Alter Rebbe. In consequence, you will study the tractate which is inscribed in the program of the yeshivah*.

B) You ask me whether a broad but superficial study, permitting the accumulation of numerous knowledge, must be preferred to a more limited but deeper study[3].

All depends, in the matter, on the erudition and the knowledge that you already possess, as well as on your capacities. You will also consult the Gemara at the end of tractate Berachos, at the end of tractate Horayos, and in the Yerushalmi at the same reference.

You will also see the chassidic* discourse entitled: "One is required to become intoxicated on Purim," pronounced in 5708[4], at chapter 12 and in the notes. Its text is printed in fascicle no. 54.

You will solicit, on this point, the counsel of the direction of the yeshivah* in which you find yourself. The latter will specify to you what is to be done. In a general manner, it is clear that each one must conduct at once a superficial study and a deep study, both as concerns the revealed part of the Torah and as concerns the teaching of Chassidus*.

You doubtless keep the three studies which concern each one and which were instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, those, well known, of Chumash, Tehillim*, and Tanya. Likewise, it would be good for you to give, without making it a vow, before the prayer, each weekday, a few coins to tzedakah*, until 10 Shevat next[5].

With my blessing to study the Torah with fear of Hashem,

[1] In this case, the one which gathers all the students of the yeshivah.
[2] See the sixth chapter of tractate Avos.
[3] See, on this subject, letter no. 1539.
[4] 1948, by the previous Rebbe.
[5] Date of the Hilula of the previous Rebbe.
