Igrot Kodesh · Letter 193 — Spiritual Reward of Funding Torah Publication

Volume 2 · Letter 25

By the grace of Hashem, Friday, 8 Elul 5705,
To the chassid* who fears Hashem and carries out his mission with faithfulness, prominent donor, Rav Ch. D. Ganeles[1],

I greet you and bless you,

Through our friends, the great Rav and very active and diligent chassid*, Rav Ch. A. Kazarnovsky, and the very dear chassid*, who dedicates himself to communal needs, Rav D. B. Chaskin, I have duly received your donation, designated for the mimeograph printing of the discourses of Rebbe* Rashab[2].

It is surely unnecessary to explain to you the great importance of this printing, the pleasure it brings to the soul of the Tzaddik*. Thanks to your donation, whoever will study this discourse will cause the lips of the Tzaddik* to move in the grave, that he may sense it, in his soul, in the Heavenly Yeshiva*. Can one imagine someone greater than King David, who wished and implored the Master of the world that his teachings be repeated, so that he could reside in both worlds simultaneously, that is, that his lips would move?

When one reports words in the name of the one who said them, the lips of the Tzaddik* move only at the moment they are spoken. In contrast, when one gives of one's money to transcribe and copy the books of the Tzaddik*, one achieves that he strengthens the merit of the donor, from the moment someone studies that book, wherever in the world that may be.

What has just been said applies to every person. But you yourself possess a particular merit, for you were one of his disciples. The Zohar* establishes that a person must honor his father even after he has departed from this world, show him respect in both worlds simultaneously. Now, commenting on the verse "you shall teach them to your sons," our Sages explain: "This refers to disciples." The students of a person are considered like his children, as the Sifri* states. The Rambam* mentions this in his Mishneh Torah*.

All that one attains is granted "measure for measure," and there is therefore every reason to think that, just as the Tzaddik* lives in both worlds when one repeats his teaching, the reward of the donor will be spiritual and material, with all material and spiritual good.

With my blessing for immediate teshuvah*, immediate redemption,
Rav Menachem Schneerson, Director of the Executive Committee[3]

P.S.: Our Sages relate that certain individuals particularly wanted their explanations to be repeated in their name, for example King David, Rabbi Yochanan, and Rav Sheshet*.

It must be concluded that the need to "dwell in Your tent for eternity" moved all three of them more than anything else. This can be explained as follows:

A) David endeavored by every means to atone for his transgression and to establish, in the eyes of all Israel, that it had truly been forgiven, as the tractates Shabbat* and Taanit* state. Now, it is said that one may study Torah* from a teacher only when one perceives him as an angel. It is for this reason that David wanted his teaching to be repeated. In this way, he could have confirmation that his transgression had truly been forgiven.

B) The tractate Berachot* teaches that Rabbi Yochanan lost all his children, and the Seder HaDorot* asks whether he subsequently had another son. In order that his teaching not be lost, he therefore had to form disciples capable of perpetuating his legacy, as the tractate Bava Batra* establishes. He therefore strove for his teaching to be widely repeated.

C) The Shaar HaGilgulim* and the Sefer HaGilgulim* give the explanation of the phrase that Rav Sheshet* would say: "My soul rejoices in You, it calls to You, it learns from You." For Rav Sheshet* knew that his soul had lived a first life in the body of Baba ben Buta, whose life had been perfect. In the second life, which was his own, he therefore had very little left to accomplish.

In such a case, the reward for the Torah* and mitzvot* performed in the second life belongs solely to the soul and not to the body. For at the resurrection of the dead, his soul would return to the first body[4], which had enabled the greater part of his accomplishments. Consequently, the body of Rav Sheshet* was sorrowful. He therefore observed that "my soul rejoices," but not my body.

But, in my humble opinion, one may perhaps advance that all of this was true only for his other accomplishments, in the domain of Torah* and mitzvot*. In contrast, when one repeats the teaching of Rav Sheshet*, his lips move in the grave, in this material world. It is then quite clear that the lips of his physical body are in motion. It is for this reason that he strove to have his teaching repeated.

Nevertheless, he said "my soul rejoices in You," for by these words he was alluding to his Torah* study, as the tractate Pesachim* explains. In contrast, the repetition of his teaching is, of course, that which he transmitted to his disciples[5].
