Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1929 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 7 · Letter 63

By the grace of Hashem,

9 Kislev 5713,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I duly received your letter of 29 Cheshvan, in which you announce to me that, for the moment, the exit authorization which would have permitted you to come here is not being granted to you, and you complain about it. You will consult the beginning of the sequence of chassidic* discourses Mayim Rabim of 5636[1]. You surely know my opinion on this question[2], and it even seems to me that I have personally written it to you.

The students of the Yeshivah Lubavitch of Lod[3] have a very large field of action in the Holy Land. There, they can illuminate the part of the world which is confided to them and therefore know success in what concerns them personally, that is to say, in the study of the revealed part of the Torah and of Chassidus*. There, their service of Hashem can be fruitful.

Despite that[4], you posed this question to me, then you posed it once again. You have also done so in an indirect manner, without going through the usual channel. I responded to you that I did not see the interest of it, but that, if you wished, you could try, and I therefore gave you my agreement. Subsequently, it was possible for you to verify that there still remained work for you, avodah*, of the same etymology as tanned skins, avudim, as different texts of Chassidus* explain, in particular the Torah Or, at the beginning of Parshas Mishpatim[5].

Your mission is therefore there. It is in this place that one needs you. It is there that you must invest your effort. You must not follow your intellectual analysis or seek the pleasure of your body and your animal soul. Now, after having had this clarification, you complain, you seek ruses and stratagems with the goal of coming here, for such is your personal will.

You also mention your birthday, and you doubtless know what is fitting to do on this day[6], in particular to be called up to the Torah, especially if it is a Shabbos, to comment publicly on Chassidus*, to read the book of Tehillim*, to give tzedakah* before the prayer if it is a weekday, or the day before, if it is a Shabbos or festival day. Doubtless, you have also seen what is said in the Hayom Yom, on the date of 11 Nissan[7], regarding the necessity of isolating oneself on this day[8]. This is established by the writings of my father-in-law, the Rebbe.

May Hashem permit you to accomplish the mission which is confided to you here below, for long days and good years, to be a chassid*, fearing Hashem, and a lamdan*. This erudition must bear not only on Chassidus*, but also on the revealed part of the Torah. Moreover, the word lamdan, learned scholar, ends with a final Nun, in the same way as the term ravtzan, designating an animal which has the habit of lying down to the ground under its burden.

In addition, this Nun describes a habitual and not a fortuitous state, as tractate Bava Metzia 33a explains. Chassidus* gives the same explanation regarding the name Gershon[9] or the word tidbekun, 'you shall cling to Him,' terms which also end with a final Nun[10], according to the Likkutei Torah Naso, p. 21a, and Re'eh, p. 20b. In this way, one can reveal everything in concrete action, here below[11].

With my blessing,

[1] 1876, of the Rebbe Maharash.
[2] Which will be recalled further on.
[3] The addressee of this letter is one of them.
[4] Although having knowledge of the Rebbe's position.
[5] Just as tanning changes the appearance of a skin, the effort of the service of Hashem permits modifying one's personality.
[6] See, on this subject, letter no. 1899.
[7] That of the Rebbe's birthday.
[8] In order to make a moral accounting and to repair what must be repaired.
[9] With a final Nun and not Gershom, with a final Mem.
[10] And therefore describe a permanent state.
[11] As the form of the final Nun evokes, which descends lower than the line.
