By the grace of Hashem,

8 Kislev 5713,

Brooklyn,

To the Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and

devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Peretz[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I received, with pleasure, your letter of 29 Cheshvan, as well as the preceding one. I took knowledge in it of the different classes that you have instituted and of the chassidic* gatherings which take place at a propitious moment. It is well evident and surely unnecessary to specify that there is no unfair competition in the matter, that one must therefore not preoccupy oneself with the discouragement of other persons[2]. There is enough work for each one of us, without anyone questioning the moral subsistence of the other.

You make a parenthesis on mashke*, which probably follows what I said to the Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav B. T. Shem Tov[3], emissary of the Sages. It seems that he did not transmit to you the explanations that I gave on this subject. They are the following.

In my opinion, the current situation is different from what it was before, when the fact of drinking much alcohol was current. Indeed,

1. All the chassidic* discourses which are easy to understand and all the talks furnishing logical explanations bring to the chassidim* the strength to influence those who listen to them without having to drink much alcohol. A small quantity is now sufficient.

2. In recent times, it is particularly required of us to spread the wellsprings of Chassidus* outward. From this point of view, the fact of drinking much alcohol can constitute a serious obstacle, which did not exist when this diffusion was limited to the four cubits of the chassidim*.

I found a proof of my first argument in the words of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, held in Riga: "I am now permanently as if I had taken a little alcohol"[4]. He was not making reference to the precise moment at which he pronounced these words, but to that period in general, since he was drinking much less alcohol. In appearance, he had adopted this attitude on medical prescription. Nevertheless, this is only an appearance, capable of satisfying only those who have a superficial attitude, but not the chassidim*, conscious of the depth that Chassidus* requires.

One must draw from this a teaching of general bearing. Indeed, just as the body follows the head, the chassidim* follow our chief, my father-in-law, the Rebbe. Now, he said that he found himself as in a state where he had taken a little alcohol. In this way, he delivered this teaching to the chassidim* and permitted them to also accede to this same state.

In speaking with Rav B. T.[3], I made it clear that these considerations relative to alcohol were not a formal interdiction or an order, chas veshalom, that no obstacle was being introduced on my part. It is solely a remark that I formulate on the difference between a chassidic* gathering in the course of which one drinks a little alcohol and one in which one absorbs so much that one leaves all measure.

With my blessing of success in your communal preoccupations, which will be a channel and a receptacle, conveying and permitting the integration of blessing into your particular preoccupations,

N.B.: You ask me to send you some certificate which could serve as a justification for your immigration request here. I have transmitted your request to Merkaz LeInyanei Chinuch, which will surely send you this document in these days.

I enclose for you the fascicle which has just appeared. Doubtless you will place it at the disposal of the largest number.
