Igrot Kodesh · Letter 192 — First Hilloula and Soul Elevation

Volume 2 · Letter 24

By the grace of Hashem, 21 Menachem Av 5705,
To the leadership of Collel* Chabad*, in Jerusalem and, at its head, to the great Rav, well known and erudite, who fears Hashem, my close relative, the Rav Ch. Y. L. Shlita[1],

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter of 27 Tammuz. I thank you for having organized, in a positive manner, all that is fitting to do during the first year and the first Hilloula*[2].

Rav H. H. Havlin[3] will deliver to you, on my behalf, one hundred dollars for the Collel's* fund, to cover all expenses incurred in this regard. I thank you once more, from the depths of my heart.

Our Sages explain that, after the first twelve months[4] have passed, that is, on the day of the first anniversary and thereafter, the soul attains elevation and can no longer descend.

An additional reason may be invoked when it concerns righteous individuals, who, upon leaving this world, attain a particularly elevated level.

You will consult, in this regard, the references cited by the Maavar Yabok*, as well as the Metzudat David*.

It is known that, on the day of passing, "all the efforts that a person accomplishes during his lifetime and which remain hidden are revealed and illuminate the world below, when he departs from the world," according to the words of the Admor HaZaken* in Iggeret HaKodesh*. It is for this reason that our Sages say that, at the very moment a person departs from life, only the Torah* he has learned and the good deeds he has performed accompany him.

Then, each year, on the anniversary day, all of this unfolds anew. For all periodic events recur each year when their date returns[5].

Furthermore, the Sages know no rest. Their elevation is perpetual, even in the World to Come. But this elevation is far greater on the day of their passing.

We have seen that the soul ascends and descends no more, but the Shaar HaMitzvot* says that this is so from the Shabbat* preceding the end of the twelve months, and not on the actual anniversary day itself, which does not correspond to the explanation just developed. One may pose a question regarding this.

I will ask you to pray for the health and wellbeing of my mother, to whom Hashem will grant good days and long years.

With my blessing for immediate teshuvah*, immediate redemption,
Rav Menachem Schneerson, Director of the Executive Committee[6]
