Igrot Kodesh · Letter 190 — Ein Sof, Divine Names, and the Ma'arechet HaElokut

Volume 2 · Letter 22

By the grace of Hashem,

Monday, 20 Menachem Av 5705,

To the Hashem-fearing chassid,* learned and of many accomplishments, the great Rav A. Hecht,[1]

I greet you and bless you,

I reply to what you asked me. The Ma'arechet HaElokut* was written by Rabbi Peretz, son of Rabbi Yitzchak Cohen, who was one of the great kabbalists* at the time of the Ramban.* At the end of Derech Mitzvotecha,* the Tzemach Tzedek* cites him several times and endeavors to interpret the Alter Rebbe's* commentaries according to his explanations.

One may also establish his greatness by the fact that, a few generations later, the kabbalist* Rabbi Yehuda Chaim, whom the Ari Zal* praised, composed a commentary on the Ma'arechet HaElokut.*

You cite what he says: "The infinite Light of Hashem, of which we have spoken, is not mentioned in the Torah."

The meaning of this assertion can be established from several chassidic* discourses — in particular the following, by the Tzemach Tzedek:*

"The kabbalists* linked the Names of Hashem to His Attributes — for example, the Name El* to the Attribute of kindness. They do not, properly speaking, allude to these Attributes. For one cannot distort the meaning of a verse, and when we read a Name of Hashem in the Torah, we think of His very Essence — which has no prior cause — and this is indeed the correct understanding.

We designate, in this case, the Essence of Hashem as He appears to us through His Attribute of kindness. Thus there are indeed ten Names of Hashem, but the Essence of Himself, expressed through these Names, is always identical — and it is to this Essence that we allude when reading these Names.

Nevertheless, no Name can, properly speaking, describe the Essence of Hashem. No word, no sign can represent Him — Heaven forbid. This is what all the Sages of Kabbalah* affirm."

The Zohar* also says:

"Before creation, it was forbidden to represent Hashem in the world — by the letter heh,* by the letter yud,*[2] or even by His holy Name, by any word, any sign. Then Hashem made the Celestial Chariot,* upon which Man appeared. From then on, He was called Havayah* so as to be perceived by His creatures. Nevertheless, He has no measure, no form, no contours."

Tikkunei Zohar,* citing the words of the prophet Eliyahu,* says: "You have no Name of which we could have knowledge." Many other references could be cited.

Furthermore, a rapid analysis leads to the conclusion that this is indeed so. For a name serves to limit and to give form — positive or negative. Yet it is clear that the Essence of Hashem has no form. You may consult, in this regard, the beginning of the Shnei Luchot HaBrit.*

You seek an allusion to this explanation in the revealed part of the Torah. But all of this is clearly stated by Midrash Shemot Rabbah,* which recounts: "The Holy One, blessed be He, said to Moshe:* You desire to know My Name? Know that it is attributed to Me according to My actions. Thus, when I feel compassion for My world, I call Myself Havayah.*"

Chassidut* speaks of this Name Havayah,* which, as it exists in the Essence of Hashem, is devoid of letters.

With my blessing of immediate teshuvah,* immediate redemption,

Rabbi Menachem Schneerson,

Director of the Executive Committee[3]
