Igrot Kodesh · Letter 186 — Tehillim as Equivalent to Torah, Divine Names, and Pesach
Volume 2 · Letter 18
By the grace of Hashem,
13 Nissan 5705,
To the great Rav, learned chassid,* Hashem-fearing, Rav Avraham Mordechai,[1]
I greet you and bless you,
Enclosed you will find a provisional receipt for the donation of twenty-five shekels[2] that you sent to the International Union for the Recitation of Tehillim.*[3] In the future, you will surely continue to support this important cause and will engage others to do the same. You will do likewise for the other areas of activity of Machaneh Israel* and of Merkaz L'Inyanei Chinuch.* To one who strengthens his commitment, blessings are multiplied — and it is surely unnecessary to explain to you how important all of this is.
One idea, nevertheless, will be briefly clarified. Tehillim* is the equivalent of the entire Torah, as the tractate Kiddushin* 30a indicates in allusion, comparing the number of verses that constitute each of them.
The difference between them[4] can be deduced from tractate Berachot* 3b: "Rabbi Eliezer says: Until midnight, he[5] studied Torah. After that, he praised and glorified Hashem." Another Sage then expresses his disagreement, but one may consider that he adopts a different position only regarding David's conduct, not regarding the difference between Torah and Tehillim.* Moreover, the Zohar* adopts the view of Rabbi Eliezer.*
The plague of the firstborn was at the origin of the Exodus from Egypt, as the plain meaning of the verse indicates. Now, it began at midnight, and they then agonized until daybreak, according to the beginning of tractate Semachot,* which is contradicted by Midrash Shemot Rabbah,* chapter 16.
According to the Zohar,* Moshe* knew that this plague would occur in the second half of the night, when Ko* — the forces of severity — are active. This is why he introduced this prophecy[6] with the word ko* — "thus"[7] — whereas the others began with "behold"[8] — which distinguished him from all other prophets.
It was therefore at midnight that Egypt was struck and Israel saved. And our Sages make the same assertion regarding Ko* — the forces of severity. According to the Zohar,* the Holy One, blessed be He, says to Avraham:* "Free yourself from the astral influences linked to Ko.* Here is the gate of prayer, through which a person receives blessing and the fulfillment of his request. Though it corresponds to severity, this Ko* is thereby transformed into mercy."
The introduction to Tikkunei Zohar* demonstrates the superiority of the verse "Hear O Israel, Hashem is our Hashem, Hashem is One," which contains, in Hebrew, twenty-five letters — the numerical value of Ko* — whereas the verse "Blessed be the Name of His glorious kingdom for ever and ever" contains only twenty-four.
This is directly connected to what was explained above. Indeed, the divine Name Havayah* appears in the verse "Hear O Israel." Now it was precisely Pharaoh who said: "I do not know Havayah"* — while he did perceive the Name Elokim,* as the commentators explain.
With my blessing for a kosher and joyous Pesach* festival, immediate teshuvah,* and immediate redemption,
Rabbi Menachem Schneerson,
Director of the Executive Committee
