Igrot Kodesh · Letter 184 — Torah Publishing Fundraising and the Power of Speech, Writing, and Print
Volume 2 · Letter 16
By the grace of Hashem,
Sunday, 7 Shevat 5705,
To the great and honorable Rav, learned and Hashem-fearing, Rav M. Hecht,[1]
I greet you and bless you,
I received your two letters safely, and you will find a receipt enclosed. I thank you.
As for the other donors, since they were told that payment was due by 9 Adar, it seems they are waiting for that date.
There is truly no reason to think that this promise is already old and has been forgotten. It is known that the third stroke of the letter heh,* which alludes to concrete action, is separated from the two others, which correspond to thought and speech.
In my opinion, you will take advantage of your visit here on the occasion of your brother's wedding[2] to obtain payment from all those who made commitments. They will give a check dated 9 Adar. As for those you will not see at the wedding, it would be good to remind them immediately of their obligation by letter, and then by telephone — of course at the expense of the Kehot* publishing house.
In one of his letters, my father-in-law the Rebbe* writes: "The Tzemach Tzedek* says that a word expressed verbally concerns the great number. If written, it addresses the entire world. If printed, it is preserved for all generations."
Happy is the person through whose merit words of Torah will be printed and will address all generations.
Furthermore, what is at stake here is the profound teaching of the Torah, which will be the essential subject of study when Moshiach* comes, as the Iggeret HaKodesh* explains. One may nevertheless ask a question, if one considers the introduction to the Biyurei HaZohar.*
With my blessing of immediate teshuvah,* immediate redemption,
Rabbi Menachem Schneerson,
Director of the Executive Committee[3]
When one speaks of "all generations," this means at least four — as the Tzemach Tzedek* explains in his commentary on Tehillim.* It also refers to the entire chain of worlds — that is, the four worlds — since each world is called a generation. Now the four worlds encompass very many levels, and all generations also constitute very many eras.
