Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1820 — Health
Volume 6 · Letter 293
By the grace of Hashem,
1 Elul 5712,
Brooklyn,
To the Rav, distinguished chassid who fears Hashem
and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav David[1],
Greetings and blessings,
A) I received in its time your letter of 11 Tammuz, with the request for a brachah* which was joined to it, which I read at the tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe. Without doubt, he will invoke divine mercy for all the points mentioned therein.
B) I thank you for what you write me concerning Beis Rivkah and the kindergarten in the Kfar[2]. I was satisfied to take cognizance of the developments of the past year, despite the difficulties which arose.
Without doubt, for the next school year, you will redouble your efforts in this sense, in conformity with the needs of the moment and the desire of our master, my father-in-law, the Rebbe.
C) I wrote, some time ago, to the committee of the Kfar to ask it to attribute a large piece of land to Beis Rivkah and the kindergarten. You will therefore do all that is possible so that this be done.
You give me the reasons for which this has not been the case until now. Even if these are true and justified, they concern only the attribution of a reward or a punishment. It is said, in fact, that one who finds himself in a situation of force majeure is not liable to any penalty. On the other hand, what was to be accomplished was not. Moreover, one opinion holds that one cannot consider such a person as if he had effectively discharged his task.
All this is well evident from the writings of Chassidus*, which underline the importance of concrete action. This is primordial, for matter, even gross matter, must be refined.
D) Concerning your personal situation and the state of health of your wife — Hashem will make that her pregnancy go well and easily, that she have a child without difficulty.
It would be good, if you have not yet done so, to have the mezuzos of your home checked. Your wife will give tzedakah* before lighting the candles on erev Shabbos and the festivals. You yourself will dedicate, every weekday, before the morning davening, a small amount which will not exceed your means. You will do so until the birth, which will take place at a good and fruitful moment.
Obviously, you will adopt all these practices without making it a vow.
E) I have no means of verifying the balance of the debt of Kehot Publications toward the printer who produced the Shulchan Aruch and the Piskei Dinim[3]. You yourself were, at the time, at the center of this affair. You will therefore please specify to me at last the amount of this balance and the contact details of the person to whom we are indebted for this debt.
F) I am worried about the manner in which one acts. One takes no initiative and, in the absence of clear instructions coming from New York, one does practically nothing.
Different texts and many sefarim explain that the purpose of study is to be capable of acting in turn. One cannot content oneself with being only the legs[4], even if these permit the entire body, including the head and the brain found there, to stand upright.
I duly received your letter in which you tell me that you adhere to the second category[5]. May Hashem grant that you know in this matter material and spiritual success.
With my blessing that you be inscribed and sealed for a good year, that you give good news of yourself and the members of your family,
M. Schneerson,
[1] Rav David Bravman, of the Holy Land. See concerning him letter 830.
[2] Kfar Chabad.
[3] Rav Bravman was, after the war, the head of publications in Europe, on behalf of Kehot Publications. See concerning this letters 415, 830, and 1059.
[4] Literally, "one cannot content oneself with Netzach, Hod, and Yesod," that is, the lowest sefiros, receiving the influence of the attributes of intellect, compared to the head, and the highest attributes of emotion, compared to the heart and the body.
[5] Defined in letter 1766.
