Greetings and blessings,

I duly received your letter of 28 Tammuz, the conveyance of which took some delay. You evoke the state of health of your wife. After the summer, you will consult two physicians specializing in gynecology in order to establish whether the operation is necessary. You will conform yourselves to their opinion. Hashem will inspire in them a judicious opinion and they will indicate to her what is good for her.

You write me that your eldest son is currently mobilized. It is no doubt unnecessary to remind you that you must write him and tell him that a Yid, in every place where he finds himself, is the emissary of the Holy One blessed be He, charged with illuminating his entourage by "the candle (which) is a mitzvah* and the Torah (which) is a light." This is particularly true for one who is in the army.

The fundamental value of an army is submission. He must therefore, at every instant, keep present in mind that if he obeys the instructions of human beings, being unable to do otherwise, all the more must he submit to the King, King of kings, the Holy One blessed be He.

Obviously, he cannot content himself with his own good. He must also adopt a broad attitude toward others, for our Sages say that the precept "you shall love your fellow as yourself" is "a great principle of the Torah." Moreover, Chassidus* explains that this injunction is the means of accomplishing another, "you shall love Hashem your Elokim*." All this is at length explained in the sicha* delivered by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, on 19 Kislev 5689.

I address you my blessing that you conceive, with your wife, much satisfaction from all your children, with tranquility of mind and body. I wish you to be inscribed and sealed for a good year.

P.S.: You no doubt take part in the activity of Agudas Chassidei Chabad in the Holy Land. Without doubt you will give me more details concerning this in your next correspondence.

קבלתי מכתבו מכ"ח תמוז - שנתאחר קצת בהילוכו - ומה שכותב בענין מצב בריאות זוגתו תחי' הנה לאחר הקיץ תתייעץ עם שני רופאים מומחים למקצוע רפואת נשים, אם זקוקה לנתוח, וכהוראתם תעשה, והשי"ת יתן להרופאים הדיעה הנכונה להורותה את הטוב לפני'.

כותב במכתבו אשר בנו הבכור נמצא עתה בצבא, ובטח למותר לעוררו שיכתבו לו, אשר ידע כי כל איש הישראלי בכל מקום שהוא נמצא, הוא שלוחו של הקב"ה להאיר אור בסביבתו בנר מצוה ותורה אור, ובפרט וביחוד כשנמצאים בצבא, שעיקר ויסוד ענין הצבא הוא קבלו עול, הרי זה צריך לעוררו ולהזכירו בכל רגע, שאם מקבל הוא עליו להשמע לפקודת בשר ודם ושא"א בלא"ה, הרי עאכו"כ בנוגע למלך מה"מ הקב"ה, ומובן שאי אפשר להסתפק בטובתו שלו, אלא שצריכה להיות עינו טובה בשל אחרים בזה וכמרז"ל ואהבת לרעך כמוך זהו כלל גדול בתורה, ובפרט ע"פ המבואר בתורת החסידות, אשר ואהבת לרעך כו' היא כלי לואהבת את ה"א, ומבואר בארוכה בשיחת י"ט כסלו תרפ"ט מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר.

בברכה אשר השי"ת יזכהו להיות לו ביחד עם זוגתו שיחיו חסידישן נחת מכל ילידיהם שיחיו מתוך מנוחת הנפש והגוף ובברכת כוח"ט.

נ"ב: בודאי לוקח חלק בעסקנות אגודת חב"ד באה"ק ת"ו ובטח במכתבו הבא יכתוב בפרטיות עד"ז.
