By the grace of Hashem,

1 Elul 5712,

Greetings and blessings,

You have informed me that you will be sixteen years old on 4 Elul. I therefore address you my blessing that you have yiras shamayim*, that you be a chassid* and a scholar, that your teachers and your parents conceive much satisfaction from you, a chassidic satisfaction.

It is unnecessary to comment to you at length on the affirmation of our Sages according to which: "He who tells you he has made efforts and that they have been crowned with success, believe him. He who tells you he has not made efforts...[1]."

In the most literal sense, this means that one must labor — not, chas veshalom*, to the point of placing one's health in danger — but rather to work to the point of awakening, in one's own person, the ardor and the passion necessary for the study of Torah. For "great is study[2]" and "great is action"[3]. May Hashem grant you success.

With my blessing to study Torah with yiras shamayim*, wishing you to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,

[3] Which is the ultimate purpose.

במענה על הודעתו אשר ביום ד' אלול הבע"ל יתמלאו לו ט"ז שנה, הנני בזה לברכו שיהי' ירא שמים חסיד ולמדן ומוריו והוריו ישבעו ממנו רוב נחת חסידישן נחת.

ולמותר להאריך בפירוש מרז"ל יגעתי ומצאתי תאמין לא יגעתי כו' אשר עיקר הכוונה בזה הוא כפשוטו ממש, פשוט הארעווען, ניט ח"ו לקלקל ולגרוע את הבריאות, ורק לייגע ולעבד עצמו שיהי' התמדה ושקידה בתלמוד גדול ומעשה גדול והשי"ת יצליחו.

בברכה לתלמוד תורה ביראת שמים וכוח"ט.
