Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1812 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 6 · Letter 285

By the grace of Hashem,

1 Elul 5712,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure your letter of the middle of the month of Menachem Av, in which you tell me that the doctor and yourself observe a clear improvement[1]. The appearance of blood was therefore solely fortuitous.

But, it is an error to think that a fortuitous event is the pure product of chance. The Baal Shem Tov explains that all is the effect of hashgachah pratis*, that nothing is left to chance in the creation. Nevertheless, this Providence may manifest itself in two ways. It may be immediately perceived as such, including by the human intellect. It may also not appear to it in an evident manner, take the form of "chance."

It is then the nefesh ha'elokis* and its intellect, intervening through that of man, which permits one to take consciousness of the truth. For it is indeed, here again, Providence. More still, this emanates from a source even more elevated[2].

A parable will illustrate our purpose. One knows that earthly kingship is in the image of the heavenly Kingship. Now, a king himself adopts two types of conduct. Sometimes, he gives an instruction in a direct manner, while, at other times, he does not wish, for some reason, to make known that he is the source of this order.

In order to determine the will of the king, in this last case, a greater wisdom is necessary[3]. Indeed, two contradictory elements are united in such a case. The will of the king must be accomplished, and one must not know that it emanates from him.

It is the same for what is the object of our discussion. It is said that "Hashem did so that one experience fear of Him." It is, for example, the raison d'être of thunder[4]. When the sought-after aim is attained and one has awakened this sentiment of fear of Hashem, the event, occurring through "chance," disappears, having no longer reason to be.

But the difference between a human king and the King, King of kings, HaKadosh Baruch Hu, is the following. The first, beyond the order that he has given, may not have knowledge of some of the events that occur. May Hashem preserve us from saying the same for the heavenly Kingship!

I learned with pleasure, from your letter, that the members of your family are well. I wish that you may be able to continue to give me good news.

You question me on the fact of leading the tefillah*[5]. It is clear that you must take care of your health. Nevertheless, you must assure yourself that the one who will do it in your place observes Torah and mitzvos, knows the meaning of the words that he pronounces. Consequently, it is no doubt preferable to opt for the middle way. You yourself will therefore lead the principal tefillos of the day, and, in order not to tire yourself too much, you will entrust a part of the tefillos to someone else, who is capable of doing it, on the condition, as I have said, that he observe Torah and mitzvos.

I took knowledge with pleasure, in your letter, of the influence that you exert on the children, in all that concerns Torah and mitzvos. It would be necessary, nevertheless, that you do so on a wider dimension. Furthermore, you must address yourself to children not only by physical age, but also by Jewish age. My father-in-law, the Rebbe, explains, in fact, that, in the sense of Yiddishkeit, one defines as days, months and years what has been accomplished in the realm of Torah and mitzvos. It is thus that one must interpret the expression "advanced in days"[6]. According to this definition, one can be physically seventy years old and, despite this, be considered as a small child.

I wish you to be inscribed and sealed for a good year, to give good news, materially and spiritually. In your next mail, you will not forget to describe to me your studies of Chassidus*, of which I have already spoken to you several times. In our era of the heels of Moshiach, this study is an absolute necessity.

I am sending you the report of the words that I spoke before the talmidim* of the yeshivah*, who are delegated by Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch[7]. In reality, they address themselves to every Yid, whom Hashem sends into this world to illuminate his surroundings by "the candle (which) is a mitzvah and the Torah (which) is light," by the luminary of the Torah, which is its inner dimension.

With my blessing in order that you be inscribed and sealed for a good year,

[1] Of the state of health of the addressee of this letter.
[2] It is for this reason that it can descend lower.
[3] Since it is concealed.
[4] Which frightens man to inspire in him the fear of Hashem.
[5] Plausibly during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
[6] Used regarding our father Avraham.
