Igrot Kodesh · Letter 181 — Haste at the Exodus, Torah as Tree of Life, and Na'aseh V'Nishma

Volume 2 · Letter 13

By the grace of Hashem,

Tuesday, 2 Shevat 5705,

Brooklyn,

To the Hashem-fearing chassid,* Rav M. M., shochet,*[1]

I greet you and bless you,

I received your second letter in its time. I was unable to reply immediately to the questions you posed in your first letter, due to my many occupations.

The two checks enclosed with your first letter were immediately transmitted to my father-in-law the Rebbe Shlita's* secretary. He has just told me that receipts were sent to those designated in your letter.

In the future, if you have further questions[2] I am prepared to examine them to the best of my ability. But do not impose a rapid reply upon me, for Merkaz L'Inyanei Chinuch,* Machaneh Israel,* and Kehot* publishing house give me a great deal of work. For that matter, I am surprised that you yourself are currently taking no part in this work.

I have asked that the latest issue of Kovets Lubavitch* be sent to you. According to the content of your letter, several sections of this periodical should interest you.

You speak of haste in the margin of your letter. Chassidut* emphasizes that it can be a virtue. This was the case at the Exodus from Egypt, when "the people fled," because the transformation of matter had not been brought to its completion.[3] In the world to come, by contrast, haste will not be necessary.[4] You may consult, in this regard, the discourse[5] of Pesach* 5703.

In a lighter vein, one may add that already now, haste is not necessary with regard to Kabbalah* and Chassidut,* which are called "the tree of life" and transcend the transformation of matter. You may consult, in this regard, the Iggeret HaKodesh,* the introduction to the Biyurei Zohar,* and the Etz Chaim* of the Rebbe Rashab.*[6]

One may further ask why Israel was praised at the giving of the Torah for being "a reckless people."[7] For were the children of Israel not then freed from their evil inclination?

With my blessing of immediate teshuvah,* immediate redemption,

Rabbi Menachem Schneerson,

Director of the Executive Committee[8]

Notes:

(1) Rav Menachem Mendel Margolis — see letter no. 177.
(2) Beyond those mentioned in the first letter.
(3) Evil therefore retained its full force.
(4) Because this transformation will have been completed.
(5) Of the Previous Rebbe.*
(6) Rabbi Shalom DovBer Schneersohn, father of the Previous Rebbe.*
(7) "Who passes its mouth before its ears" — that is, who committed to fulfilling the Torah's commandments before even knowing them.
(8) Of Machaneh Israel.*
