Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1807 — Chinuch
Volume 6 · Letter 280
By the grace of Hashem,
First day of Rosh Chodesh Elul 5712,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
I received, in its time, your letter, in which you describe to me your function as a shochet*. I was particularly satisfied to ascertain that you seek, by all possible means, to fix shiurim* for the young people. You wonder whether your imperfect mastery of the language of the country will permit you to do so. Experience has proven that, from the moment one understands one's interlocutor well, a summary knowledge of a language suffices very largely.
But, for this, one must not be discouraged owing to the imperfections of one's language. Indeed, the purpose of your speech is particularly elevated, and it is therefore certain that you benefit from divine help.
I hope that, by the reception of the present letter, this project will already have been concretized or, at the least, will be near to being so. It is no doubt useless to specify to you that the aim of such a class is to lead its participants to the effective practice of mitzvos.
You write me that a part of these persons recite Kaddish. You will therefore begin by explaining to them the necessity of putting on tefillin*. You will show them that it is paradoxical to say "may the great Name be exalted and sanctified," on the one hand, and not to accept the kingship of Hashem, on the other hand.
I am sending you the words spoken before the talmidim* of the yeshivah* delegated by Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch, which concern, in reality, every Yid, and, in particular, those who evolve in an environment to which they have not been habituated. Indeed, every Jewish soul has known elevation within the Thought of Hashem. Chassidus* even specifies that it occupies the most elevated stage there. Then, it descended, from a high summit toward a deep pit, into this material world, delivered to the forces of evil, in which the wicked are powerful, as the Etz Chaim says, cited at the end of the sixth chapter of the Tanya.
You do not tell me what is the destination of the amount enclosed with your letter. I have therefore transmitted it to the office of discreet actions, which is one of the most elevated forms that tzedakah can take.
With my blessing for you to subvene to your needs, materially and spiritually, wishing you to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,
