Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1803 — Science and Torah
Volume 6 · Letter 276
By the grace of Hashem,
28 Menachem Av 5712,
Brooklyn,
I bless you and greet you,
I received with pleasure your letter of 10 Menachem Av. You tell me that you are satisfied with the points that I "touched upon" in my letter[1]. I employ this term deliberately, for it is difficult to bring, in writing, all the necessary precisions, all the more so as I do not well know your personality and your capacities. The introduction of the Tanya underlines the advantage of oral communication, in relation to written correspondence. Indeed, one who reads a text interprets it in his own way, according to his own vision and his intellectual means. Not all have the same aptitudes and the same ideas.
You ask me whether one can define the six days of creation by considering that each of them is equivalent to several years, which will permit one to be in agreement with the opinion of the geologists and astronomers.
It is impossible to accept this interpretation, even if some Sages of Yisroel have committed this error, with all due respect. For on this depends the definition of Shabbos[2]. One of the two reasons for which we observe this day is the fact that Hashem created the world in six days "and, on the seventh, He rested."
This simple proof adds itself to many others, which are found in nigleh and in the esoteric teaching of the Torah. The six days of creation must therefore be interpreted in the most literal sense, just as we write in official acts that this year is the five thousand seven hundred twelfth since the creation of the world.
You must not be troubled by all this. Indeed, the scientists themselves emit theories that contradict each other radically. They also diverge in their calculations[3].
The great Rav, distinguished chassid who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Mordechai HaCohen Perlov, told me that you came to his aid for the construction of the mikveh*[4], so that it be realized in the best possible manner, in conformity with the teachings of our holy Torah. I was very satisfied with your participation.
May Hashem grant that your effort to bring to the world taharah*, which is one of the fundamental pillars on which rest the families constituting the Jewish people, bring you success and blessing in your personal preoccupations. You will find, in particular, very soon, a match that suits you, materially and spiritually. Moreover, such an action hastens the geulah*, as the Tosafos Yom Tov, at the end of Maseches Yoma, explains.
I am sending you an extract from what was said during the Shabbos in the course of which we blessed the month of Elul. You will surely diffuse it, in the manner that befits, among your acquaintances. I do not know whether you are capable of translating it. If you can write it yourself in Italian or entrust this task to other persons, I would be satisfied to see the printed version of it. It would be preferable that you send me the translated text before printing, for I know a little of this language.
With my blessing of material and spiritual success,
[1] It is letter no. 1662. See also letter no. 1824.
[2] Which can be only a day of twenty-four hours.
[3] Of the age of the earth. The Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "Thus, the calculations are based on the quantity of salt found in the ocean, the relation between radium, uranium, and lead when all three are jointly present, what one perceives of the layer surrounding the sun and what it provokes. Depending on whether one adopts one criterion or another, one arrives at opposite results. But this point will not be developed here."
[4] Of Milan. See, on this subject, letter no. 1720.
