Igrot Kodesh · Letter 180 — Rebbe's Health, the Number Eight, and the Path to Redemption

To the leadership of Kollel Chabad* in Jerusalem, and at its head to the well-known, learned, Hashem-fearing Rav, my close relative, Rav Sh. Y. L.[1] Shlita,*

I greet you and bless you,

I received your letter of 3 Kislev safely. Thank Hashem, the health of my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita,* is improving.[2] The doctors have now permitted him to resume his work for a few hours each day. Nevertheless, they still forbid him from granting private audiences. In general, everything that might cause him distress or emotional exertion must be avoided. We hope that he will improve a little each day.

Here, we continue to recite several Tehillim* after the morning prayer, in addition to those recited according to the monthly division. No doubt you yourselves continue to do the same. May Hashem send my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita,* a complete recovery very soon, in accordance with the prayer of all the chassidim,* Amen, may this be His Will.

Tractate Megillah* 17b, our Sages emphasize that healing is connected to the eighth blessing[3] — "Heal us... grant us a complete healing" — and to the eighth luminary. Among the various masters of Chassidut,* beginning with the Ba'al Shem Tov* and the Maggid of Mezeritch,* this is indeed the level of Yosef.*[4]

Thus, Hadar was the eighth king,[5] the righteous person is linked to Yesod* — the heavenly Attribute of Foundation[6] — circumcision is performed on the eighth day, Shemini Atzeret*[7] corresponds to the level of Yosef.*[8]

Furthermore, the numerical value of Yitzchak*[9] is eight times that of the divine Name Havayah.*[10] And when we attain collective healing in the world to come, with the coming of Moshiach* — very soon and in our days — we will have[11] the harp with eight strings. Then, our Sages say: "It will be said to Yitzchak:* You are our father."

Tractate Sanhedrin* 94a states that "the Holy One, blessed be He, wished to make Chizkiyahu* the Moshiach."* It is said that Moshiach* will come when money loses its value — which is indeed the case in our days. And it is known that Chizkiyahu* bore eight names.

מכתבם מיום ג' כסלו הגיעני, ות"ל אשר מצב בריאות כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שליט"א הולך וטוב, עתה הרשו הרופאים אשר שעות אחדות ביום יחזור לעבודתו בקדש, אבל איסור קבלת אנשים ל"יחידות" עדיין במקומו עומד, ובכלל - הזהירות בריחוק כל ענין של עגמ"נ והתרגשות וכיו"ב, ומקוים הם אשר מיום ליום יוטב המצב.

ממשיכים אנו פה באמירת תהלים (איזה קאפ' אחר תפלת שחרית, נוסף על שיעור קבוע כפי שנחלק לימי החדש) ובודאי גם אתם ממשיכים עתה בענינים האלה, וישלח השי"ת לכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שליט"א רפואה שלימה בקרוב ממש כעתירת ותפלת כל אנ"ש, אכי"ר.

- להעיר ממרז"ל (מגילה יז, ב. ונתבאר בתהלים להצ"צ ו, א) רפואה בשמינית, דקאי על ברכת רפאנו כו' והעלה ארוכה ורפואה שלמה כו', נר השמיני (בדורות נשיאי תורת החסידות: הבעש"ט, הה"מ וכו') מדריגת יוסף (מלך השמיני הדר - הוספות לתו"א ויחי - צדיק יסו"ע מילה בשמינית. שמיני עצרת בחי' יוסף - זח"א רח, ב. לקו"ת למוהר"ש נ"ע ע"א ע"ד) - יצחק (ח"פ הוי' - אוה"ת להצ"צ דף דש, א). וברפואה הכללית שיהי' לע"ל (יעויין ד"ה סמכוני - בדרך אמונה להצ"צ) בימוה"מ, שיבוא ב"ב, ימים דכנור של ח' נימין ואז יאמרו ליצחק דוקא כי אתה אבינו, ועיין (סנה' צד, א) ביקש הקב"ה לעשות חזקי' משיח כו', עד מתי כו' עד דאתי בזוזי ובזוזי דבזוזי (שנתקיים כבר בימינו) כו' חזקי' שיש לו שמונה שמות כו'.
