Volume 6 · Letter 266
By the grace of Hashem,
27 Menachem Av 5712,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
The continuation of the note of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, concerning his imprisonment[1], has not yet been published. As soon as it is, with the help of Hashem, I will send it to you.
I read with pleasure in your letter that your daughter has promised you to conduct herself and to lead her home in conformity with the Jewish tradition. Nevertheless, you know the halachah* according to which one can hardly content oneself with a presumption, every time a verification is possible[2]. This is what the Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah, ch. 1, par. 1, says in the note. How much more is it the case for what concerns all the generations, until the end of the world[3].
I permit myself therefore to underline to you once again the necessity of having the certainty that she knows precisely at least what are the rules of taharas hamishpachah*. One presently finds books printed in the language of the country[4], for example by the Young Israel, which set forth the detail of all these principles.
Formerly, certain ones were ashamed to evoke this subject. Now, experience has shown us that the forces of evil pronounce repugnant words and even have them printed. And such initiatives are rewarded by what are called literary prizes. To cite a pleasant pun, one could, moreover, bring closer Price, the prize, to pritzus*, indecency. But when one wishes to evoke what concerns the soul of the parents and of the children, these same forces of evil also present themselves, in the form of the "little clever one"[5], and recall that tznius* is the traditional quality of Yisroel. It is surely useless to say more.
You will consult Maseches Nedarim 20a and the commentary of the Maharsha at this reference, as also Maseches Yevamos 79a, which cites the three qualities defined as the characters of the Jewish people[6] and whose Hebrew initials form the word gever, man.
Rachmanus and good deeds are the inheritance of the Jewish people since the time of our father Avraham. Tznius*, by contrast, was acquired only with the giving of the Torah, which permits one to establish the marvelous precision of the Tanya[7] which, in its first chapter, mentions the first two qualities, but not the third, without even alluding to it by an "etc." One can justify it according to what has just been said.
There is therefore in this a lesson for us all. The tznius* of each one must be that of a man who has taken an oath before Mount Sinai, since it is in this place that this quality was granted to the children of Yisroel. Were it not for this revelation, the Yidden would be the most insolent people, as Maseches Beitzah 25b says.
You will surely pardon me this intervention, for my intention is purely positive and it matters only that you may be able to verify all this. Our Sages affirm that words emanating from the heart enter the heart of the one who listens to them.
I address you my blessing of good health, for yourself, for your wife and for all the members of your family. You will transmit my greetings to your son who accompanied you when you visited me. I would like to know in what domain he has, since then, drawn closer to Hashem. Indeed, the principle of this drawing closer is a certainty, for our Sages affirm that one knows elevation in all that touches the realm of holiness. Now, we are all approaching the moment of the coming of our Moshiach and the end of our exile.
With my blessing,
[1] In the Soviet prisons, which is the origin of the festival of liberation of 12 Tammuz.
[2] One must therefore verify that she keeps her word.
[3] The fact of having children who, in their turn, will themselves have them.
[4] In English.
[5] The yetzer hara.
[6] "They are merciful, modest, and do good deeds."
[7] See, on this subject, letter no. 326.
