Igrot Kodesh · Letter 178 — Condolence and Consolation on Father's Passing
Volume 2 · Letter 10
By the grace of Hashem,
23 Tevet 5705,
Brooklyn,
To the leadership of Kollel Chabad* in Jerusalem, and at its head to the well-known, learned, Hashem-fearing Rav, my close relative, Rav Sh. Y. L.[1] Shlita,*
I greet you and bless you,
I received your letter of condolences in its time. I delayed my reply in the hope of being able to determine the exact date of my father's passing.[2] For the moment this has not been possible. The telegram sent to me from there bears the date of August 12 — that is, 23 Menachem Av.
I thank you from the depths of my heart for the Torah study and prayers you arranged in memory of my father, as well as for your prayers for the well-being of my mother — may she know many long and good years.
Tractate Sukkah* teaches that good deeds are superior[3] because they reveal goodness in all its force (...)
Chassidut* defines the consolation of mourners.[4]
Several texts allow one to establish that the following order is adopted. First comes an initiative of Hashem, which awakens man's effort and brings him the strength to develop it. Then comes man's own effort, which must be commensurate with what he wishes to obtain — to forge a vessel for the heavenly blessing. Finally, divine revelation is obtained, transcending man's efforts and surpassing that blessing.
This applies also to the consolation of mourners, which the Ba'al Halachot Gedolot* defines as a Torah commandment, whereas for the Rambam* it is a rabbinic enactment. Yet it proceeds according to the same order:
A) The divine revelation is defined by tractate Sotah,* according to which "the Holy One, blessed be He, consoles mourners." This was revealed and recounted to us so that we would have the strength to do the same. And since this strength is granted, we have the duty to make use of it. Consequently: "Console mourners yourself."[5]
B) Man's effort consists in consoling the mourner. The established formula is: "Hashem will console you among all the other mourners of Zion and Jerusalem," which prepares the divine blessing that subsequently reveals itself. The effort made by one who has consoled the mourner thus draws
C) a blessing from Hashem. Thus the Holy One, blessed be He, Himself consoles the mourner — all the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem — by rebuilding these cities and reviving the dead. Beyond this, there will furthermore be
D) a heavenly revelation transcending this blessing. Hashem's consolation will be twofold, not limited to restoring what previously existed. It is of this that it is said: "Console, console My people" — announcing this double consolation. For indeed, "the honor of this last Temple will be greater."[6]
This refers to the Temple of the world to come, according to Tikkunei Zohar,* the eighth Tikkun,* and the Emek HaMelech,* gate of Kiryat Arba, end of chapter 152. This interpretation does not contradict the plain meaning of the verse. Moreover, tractate Bava Batra* considers it to speak of the Second Temple, built after the Babylonian exile, which, had the Jews not sinned, would have been that of Moshiach* (...)
With my blessing of immediate teshuvah* and immediate redemption,
Rabbi Menachem Schneerson
P.S. Please let me know what the initiatives described above cost.
