Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1564 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 6 · Letter 36 · To: Rabbi

By the grace of Hashem,

11 Iyar 5712,

Brooklyn,

To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Nissan[1],

Greetings and blessings,

A) As you have requested and for the sake of good order, I confirm to you once more that I have indeed received all your letters sent after the festivals of Tishrei, namely those of 28 Tishrei, 8, 13 and 17 Kislev, 2 and 29 Teves, 5, 16 and 19 Shevat, 20 and 27 Adar, 7 Iyar, as well as the lists[2] and the requests for blessing that accompanied them and that have been read, at an opportune moment, at the tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe.

B) I received with particular pleasure the list of chassidim* who are in Russia. This brings out two essential points:

1. There exists, between you and our brothers who are in Russia, an ahavas Yisrael* and a bond that is not broken.

2. It is virtually certain that maintaining the connection with them, even if only in thought, strengthens collective responsibility and brotherhood among all.

Thus, just as the difficulties and concealments inherent in that country do not affect those who do not live in it, the bond with those who still find themselves there gives them the strength to take heart and hold firm, despite the situation they face. The hold that those who seek to persecute them can exercise over them is reduced accordingly.

For example, when one part of the body is in a place where the air is holy and pure, the other part, which is in a stifling cellar, is enlivened by it. But this is so only insofar as it is one and the same body. This is precisely what thought, and especially imagination, can accomplish, as various sichos* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, explain. For in this domain, time and space have no bearing.

You will also consult the sicha* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, delivered on the night of Shemini Atzeres 5693[3], in the sukkah*. There it speaks of a leader of the Jewish people, but its equivalent can be found in all those who are bound to him. Moreover, this involves a community, and it is said that "He is a great Hashem and does not turn away[4]."

In the future, you will surely maintain this attachment. Without a doubt, it will be very useful to those who find themselves there and also to those who are here. My father-in-law, the Rebbe, says, indeed, that "the Holy One, blessed be He, does not remain in debt."

C) You tell me that the talmidim* have not found the calm of mind that would allow them to study as is fitting. Indeed, they are troubled by the journeys. I am therefore enclosing a brief letter addressed to them[5]. You will surely explain it to them in the appropriate manner.

D) I noted with satisfaction the program of studies and especially the fact that you have maintained, for those pursuing rabbinical studies and learning Yoreh Deah[6], a few hours of Gemara* each day. As for Chassidus*, it is also good that you have set out for the texts to be learned by heart.

In this matter, one must take into account the comprehension and memory of each one. Those who have difficulty learning by heart and must devote much time to this activity cannot be wholly exempt from it; nevertheless, this should not be too burdensome for them, by imposing upon them the same pace as those who retain easily.

In this matter, it falls to the mashpia* to make the decision on the spot and to determine what each one can learn. In any event, all must adopt this practice, at least minimally.

E) Another point must be specified, concerning the study of Chassidus* by heart. Among the maamarim* that one recites by heart, some must be easy to understand for those who do not devote themselves to study and for young men who do not have a good knowledge of Chabad Chassidus*.

These maamarim* will therefore not be tied to a particular festival or Shabbos, but to a theme that may be evoked throughout the year. Thus, one will be able to recite them whenever it becomes necessary, when one must repeat Chassidus* outside the yeshivah* or away from chassidim*.

F) The summer vacation of the French municipal schools is approaching. Everything must therefore be done to receive, during this vacation, young people who, for the time being, do not belong to our circle. They will spend a few weeks under your influence, and so there is good hope that they will change their conduct and draw closer to the Torah of Hashem and its mitzvos*.

Moreover, perhaps it will be possible to lead them to pursue their studies in a good Talmud Torah after the vacation, to take part in public shiurim*, or even to enter the Lubavitcher yeshivah*.

G) You asked me whether you should leave France to come and settle here. I avoided answering this question, thinking that you yourself would interpret this silence as a reply. I have, moreover, expressed my opinion clearly to those who questioned me orally, for example to the Rav and chassid*… Nevertheless, you repeat this question in every letter, including the most recent ones. I will therefore address this subject briefly and concisely.

Whenever such a question arises — "I will turn aside from here in order to draw near to there"[7] — one must reason by taking into account the two places, "here" and "there." You are, in this case, a personality with a public dimension. Our Sages remark that "the appointee over the well is named by Hashem"[8]. How much more so for one whose talmidim* are scholars of the Torah and especially of its inner teaching.

One must therefore, first of all, take your disciples into account. Consider, then, your situation in Paris and in France. Hashem has granted you the merit of being at the head of an institution founded by our Rebbeim, the Lubavitcher yeshivah*, in which the Torah is studied with yiras Shamayim*, by cutting oneself off from this material and coarse world and thus having more refined and elevated concerns.

During the years you have spent there, it has indeed been seen that you have multiplied the number of talmidim*, including in the highest classes of this institution and, all the more so, in the lower classes and the Talmudei Torah attached to it. Your influence also extends to those who visit families to bring "the candle, which is a mitzvah*, and the Torah, which is light" into the as-yet-unaware Jewish homes of France, so that they may be able to come, from their home, toward a place of Torah and mitzvos*.

All this has been observed, even though no effort has been made to broaden and increase the number of talmidim*. One can therefore imagine what the situation would have been had such an effort actually been made. To be sure, there are several leaders and several directors who exercise their influence within the yeshivah*. But, as is generally the case in such institutions, everything rests on a single man, who must set the tone and maintain the spirit of the various components of this institution.

I have been told what is happening in Paris, what was unfolding in Pocking[9], and the situation that prevailed in Russia. All of this allows it to be established that you are that man. It is you who have strengthened and enlivened all parts of the yeshivah* and the circles of chassidim* that revolve around it.

Thus, several chassidim* have left France, and in my opinion they have acted foolishly, with the exception of a few of them. I would therefore like to repeat once again that there is much to be done to increase the number of talmidim* of the yeshivah* and the chadorim* attached to it. You must also develop the qualitative dimension of it. Nevertheless, there is a condition for this, as for everything tied to the Torah and the mitzvos*. One must act, and do so sincerely, wanting to succeed and not contenting oneself with merely discharging one's obligation.

After reflecting on all this, I do not see how you can leave your place at the head of the Lubavitcher yeshivah* of France, which is, for the time being, the only one in Europe and which has known how to preserve the spirit of Lubavitch beyond other yeshivos*. I do not know whether other proofs need to be cited or other justifications mentioned.

I will therefore add only the following points. The Tzemach Tzedek* says[10] that "we are workers of the day." Our mission is to instill clarity, and such, then, is our existence, our deepest nature. The Alter Rebbe* assures us[11] that by giving tzedakah*, "one has a brain and a heart a thousand times more refined." It is clear that this also applies to spiritual tzedakah*. The notes on the Chassidic maamar* at the beginning of Torah Or* on three parshiyos, in which this assertion appears, establish that this number of a thousand is entirely precise. It is by no means an exaggeration.

This means, in the most literal sense, that what one can ordinarily understand only by an effort of a thousand hours is acquired in one hour, thanks to tzedakah*. If you reckon up the success thus introduced into time, you will see that it is, properly speaking, prodigious.

The central point of all that has just been said is the following. Why do you wish to bear the burden alone, to wage by yourself the war on the outside and on the inside at once, when it suffices for you to attach yourself to the institution founded and directed by our Rebbeim, to become an integral part of it, to be a part of our Rebbeim, who thereby take responsibility for your person? In such a case, your mission consists solely in doing nothing to prevent the blessing from being revealed, spiritually and materially, so that you may internalize it deeply and transmit it to all those who lend their support to your activities — in general, to those that allow the spreading of the wellsprings[12] outward and the maintaining of the assigned objective inwardly.

Obviously, I do not wish to exclude entirely the possibility of a journey. We live, indeed, in the period of "the heel of the heel of Moshiach*," which can produce very many changes. A modification of your situation thus remains possible. Likewise, I do not exclude a journey whose object would be a visit[13]. By contrast, if it is a matter of a permanent move, I see, as I have said, no argument, no logical reasoning, that would justify your abandoning the place in which you find yourself in order to seek something new. There is no need to say more.

I extend my blessing for success in your sacred mission — that of instilling enthusiasm, attachment, unification with Hashem, in your talmidim* in particular and in those around you in general. This will be the channel and the receptacle that will allow you to obtain good health, both moral and physical, for yourself and for all the members of your family.

In expectation of your good news,
