By the grace of Hashem,

11 Iyar 5712,

Brooklyn,

To the young men devoting themselves to the study of the Torah

and the service of Hashem in the Lubavitcher yeshivah*

in the city of Paris[1],

may Hashem grant them long life,

Greetings and blessings,

I was glad to learn, from the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, mashpia* and director, Rav Nissan[2], how your studies and your service of Hashem are organized. By contrast, I was pained and distressed that you have not displayed the depth required for studying the Torah in general, and for learning Chassidus* and praying with fervor in particular — no doubt because you are preoccupied with your move[3]. My time does not permit me to address this subject in detail, but its importance prompts me to send you the following few lines.

You are no doubt familiar with the sicha* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, explaining the journeys of the Children of Israel in the wilderness[4]. From one stage to the next, they would dismantle the Mishkan* and then set it up at its new place. The verse specifies that the stay at each stage was not always of equal duration. It states: "It happened that the cloud would remain from evening until morning. Then in the morning it would lift, and they would set out. Sometimes it was a day, a night, two days, a month, or a year."

Nevertheless, all these journeys had a common feature: "At the word of Hashem they encamped, and at the word of Hashem they set out." Furthermore, "they kept the watch of Hashem, at the word of Hashem, through Moshe." In other words, the manner of setting up the Mishkan* and all that pertained to "the watch of Hashem" was never modified, whether the Children of Israel had stayed a year, several years, or a day and a night, or even from evening until morning.

Human logic, including that of the nefesh habahamis*, holds that one settles down and travels according to the word of Hashem, Who transcends time and space. The purpose of creation in general, and of these journeys in particular, is to build a Mishkan* for Hashem in material time and space. It is therefore incumbent upon us to put into practice the will of our Creator, in order to bind ourselves and to attach ourselves to the very Essence of Hashem, blessed be He.

His will is therefore fulfilled, whether one remains in a place for several years or only from evening until morning. For it is indeed a question, in this case, of revealing what transcends time and space. The various periods of time therefore have no significance.

What has just been said allows us to understand the end of chapter 25 of the Tanya*, according to which "this unification[5] is eternal and immutable, on high." The expression of the will of Hashem, by His word, in the Torah, is likewise eternal. One can, in addition, derive an additional precision concerning the various domains for which the revealed part of the Torah imposes a measure, which is considered a mitzvah* the moment the Torah so prescribes. In such cases, this measure can itself be considered material.

I am hopeful that these few words will suffice. I hope soon to receive the good news of your increased commitment to the study of the Torah and to prayer, both for yourselves and for the influence you exert on others. Without a doubt, the promise and the ruling of the Sages will be realized for you, affirming that "a man who sanctifies himself a little here below receives from above a great sanctification." For this is indeed a promise.

With my blessing for success in the study of the Torah pervaded by yiras Shamayim*,
