Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1561 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 6 · Letter 33 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem,
10 Iyar 5712,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem
and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Ephraim Eliezer[1],
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter written at the conclusion of Shabbos "Tiferes shebeTiferes"[2], the birthday of the Rebbe Maharash*. You write that you have been asked about the end of the first chapter of the maamar* entitled "There was a dispute in the Heavenly academy," in Likkutei Torah* Tazria, which says: "The level of Keser*[3] flows from the attribute of Malchus* of the Or Ein Sof*, which is only an emanation and a reflection of the Creator Himself." Several questions are raised about this:
A) You ask to what the expression "which is only one" refers. If it refers to Keser*, this assertion is incomprehensible, for the attribute of Malchus* of the Or Ein Sof* is itself an emanation and a reflection. And if it refers to that attribute, it ought to have been expressed in the feminine[4].
Here is my response:
To dispel the doubt, one may consult the same text, which also appears in the Sefer HaMitzvos of the Tzemach Tzedek*. In that work, on page 103a, it states: "The level of Keser* flows solely from the attribute of Malchus* of the Or Ein Sof*, and this level of Malchus* is an emanation and a reflection of the Essence of Hashem"[5].
You ask why the feminine is not employed by the Likkutei Torah*, as is the case in the Sefer HaMitzvos. You should know that Chassidic maamarim* do not contain such precisions, except, for example, in the first part of the Tanya*, which uses the masculine and feminine, the singular and plural, with rigor.
In fact, there was a dispute on this between the Rashal and the Rema, as is reported in the responsa of the Rema, ch. 4, the details of which you should consult. You will also see the Rashbatz, vol. 1, ch. 43, cited by the Sdei Chemed, principles of decisors, ch. 16, par. 65, which states: "It is not degrading for a Sage not to know the rules of grammar and vocabulary. Thus, in the piyutim of Rabbi E. HaKalir, who was one of the greatest Sages, there are several grammatical errors."
Grammatical imprecisions in Chassidic maamarim* may also be explained, as the Rema states in his responsa cited above, by an error of the copyists.
Returning to our subject, namely this passage from the Likkutei Torah*, one can also explain it in another way, according to what Chassidus* says about the formulation of the prayer "All this is faith, established for us," the first expression of which is in the feminine and the second in the masculine, as the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas Eikev, page 16d, explains.
For the attribute of Malchus*, being at the end of a spiritual world, is in a position to receive[6]. Then it constitutes the beginning of this material world and is the element that gives[7]. That is why one finds "all this is faith"[8], and then says that it is "established for us"[9].
It is therefore the same with our passage from the Likkutei Torah*, explaining how Keser* receives from the attribute of Malchus* of the Or Ein Sof*. The latter is therefore the giving element, and accordingly the masculine is employed to describe this revelation from above.
The Tzemach Tzedek*, on the other hand, employs the feminine, since he speaks twice of this attribute of Malchus*: "The level of Keser* flows solely from the attribute of Malchus* of the Or Ein Sof*, and this level of Malchus* is an emanation and a reflection of the Essence of Hashem." He thus speaks of this attribute of Malchus* in its totality, and not solely as a receiving element. Accordingly, he expresses himself in the feminine.
B) Why speak of emanation and reflection, when the latter term alone could have sufficed?
As I have said, it is not easy to explain such repetitions, including in the first part of the Tanya*. You will consult, in this regard, the interpretations that can be made on the third chapter of Shaar HaYichud VehaEmunah*, which speak sometimes of emanation, sometimes of reflection, sometimes of both at once, and which cite first sometimes emanation, sometimes reflection. So it is in several other texts.
In general, one can define with precision the meaning of these terms — whether they concern the giving element or the receiving one — by observing how they are used in other texts.
From the standpoint of the giving element, the emanation is more important than the reflection, which is only secondary, accessory in relation to it. Thus, it is often said that "the emanation is representative of that which emits it," or that "the emanation is bound up with that which emits it." Nothing of the kind is said of the reflection.
From the standpoint of the receiving element, the emanation, which is elevated and representative of that which emits it, can only be integrated superficially. By contrast, the reflection, which is secondary and accessory, can be received deeply. Our Sages therefore say, in the tractate Berachos* 17a and in Rashi's commentary[10], that "they wear their crowns on their heads, perceive a reflection of the Shechinah*, and eat." Now the crown is indeed an external, accessory element, and eating constitutes a pleasure that is deeply internalized.
The attribute of Malchus* and Keser* present these two aspects. That is why one speaks both of emanation and of reflection. You will also consult the Likkutei Torah* of this week, on pages 20a and 20b.
C) The Likkutei Torah*, at the same reference, at the end of chapter 2, defines several garments of thought. The deepest is the one devoted to the wisdom of the Torah. There is another, defined as "a middling garment"; this is the one concerned with a science whose conclusions are necessary to the Torah, for example astronomy.
You are in doubt on this and ask whether reflection on the beauty of creation in order to perceive the greatness of Hashem is a deep thought or a middling one.
In my opinion, two conceptions can be entertained. One can meditate on the greatness of creation in the most literal sense, as the Rambam* states at the beginning of the second chapter of the Laws of the Foundations of the Torah: "What is the way to love Him and to fear Him?" Such a reflection is a preparation for the mitzvah* of loving Hashem and fearing Him.
By contrast, if one meditates on the chain of worlds, on the interaction of the sefiros* among themselves, one is fulfilling, properly speaking, "a lofty and weighty mitzvah*"[11], which, moreover, is to be given precedence over many others, as it is said: "And you shall know today that Hashem is Elokim*" and "Know the Elokim* of your father." You will consult the Kuntres Acharon of the Tanya*, at the section "To understand what the Pri Etz Chaim says," page 156b.
Note: In the editions[12] available to us, the wording is "a great and weighty mitzvah*." And one can raise a question on this from the tractate Bava Basra* 8b and the Tosafos* on tractate Gittin* 41b. Nevertheless, the chassid*, Rav Asher, who was the editor of the Tanya*, drew up a list of misprints in which he indeed states "a lofty and weighty mitzvah*." My father-in-law, the Rebbe, gave his approval to this list.
D) In chapters 3 and 4, at the same reference, you ask whether the kelipas nogah* of the spiritual world of Atzilus* has a hold on the attribute of Tiferes* of that world, or only on those of Chesed* and Gevurah*.
The context allows it to be established that such a hold becomes possible from the moment when the light of Chochmah*[13] has withdrawn. Nevertheless, to say that this hold extends to Tiferes*, or at least to Netzach*, Hod*, and Malchus*, is not accurate. Heaven forfend that one think it is so.
The explanation is as follows. When the light of Chochmah* withdraws, even if the other sefiros* remained in their place, this hold becomes possible. Nevertheless, it does not extend to the sefiros* themselves, chas veshalom*.
The verse states, in this regard, "if a man bears a plague upon the skin," and you should consult, on this subject, the Likkutei Torah*, at the same reference, in the maamar* entitled "This." So it is with the maamar* that is the subject of our discussion. The hold extends to the words, but not to the sefiros* themselves, chas veshalom*.
E) You ask about the assertion that appears in various texts[14], according to which a verse teaches what is certain and not what is the subject of doubt. You establish a connection between this principle and the dispute that seeks to determine whether the patch must appear before the white hair[15].
You will consult, in this regard, the end of chapter 4 of this same maamar*, which defines doubt and its clarification as it applies to the plague, to the case of the mamzer*, and to other domains.
F) This Chassidic maamar* also delivers an ethical teaching.
You will consult, in this regard, the sicha* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, of 18 Elul 5703[16], on page 15.
G) I have just received your letter of this past Sunday. I thank you very much for the pleasing explanations you give me on the verse "You shall be holy." Among the Chabad chassidim*, these are transmitted in the name of Rav Shmuel Betzalel Sheftel, the mashpia* of the yeshivah* in Lubavitch, who, at Chassidic gatherings, would say: "I might think that my holiness reaches that of Hashem: this is an affirmation"[17]. It is therefore possible to identify with Hashem, for "I am holy" and "My holiness is above yours"[18], which means that yours derives from Mine.
With my blessing,
Concerning the saying of our Sages that "there was a dispute in the Heavenly academy," there is a masterful explanation in the Malbim's commentary on the Torah and the mitzvos*, at the beginning of Parshas Chukas. Nevertheless, the comparison brings out clearly the nature of Chassidus*, of its sources, of its influence, and of the new light it reveals.
