Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1556 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 6 · Letter 28

By the grace of Hashem,

10 Iyar 5712,

Brooklyn,

To the rav*, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself faithfully to communal needs,

Rav Michael [1],

Greetings and blessings,

In follow-up to my preceding correspondence [2], I wish to pose to you the following questions:

A) Has the dispensation from going to school on Shabbos* been granted to the talmidim* of Guercif? Of course, one must do everything to obtain it, for a weakness in one place could spread to all the others.

B) Where stands the library [3]? Installing it in the municipal meeting hall will have the advantage of permitting it to be much frequented. Nevertheless, it is preferable for it to be located in a place that belongs to the Oholei Yosef Yitzchak network, in order to be one of its activities and to be perceived as such.

There is good hope that, in this manner, persons will draw close to you and that you will have new talmidim*. Generally, your objective must be that the yeshivah* in particular, and Oholei Yosef Yitzchak in general, not be solely scholastic institutions, but also places from which a strengthening of all that pertains to Yiddishkeit* spreads throughout the entire city and its region.

Of course, all this must be carried out diplomatically.

C) I would like to know whether you have already received the English-language sefarim* about which you wrote me some time ago, and whether it is conceivable that these be in the library, or whether there would result an inconsiderate attitude and a tendency to integrate studies that do not belong to our domain.

D) You ask me about the letterhead. The girls' schools must also be mentioned on it. You ask me whether the address from here should figure on it. It happens that, in your country, relations with other states are no longer regarded in the same way. Various opinions are emitted on this subject. I therefore have some apprehension about ostensibly displaying this address until this entire problem has been clarified.

On the other hand, you can have a stamp made or labels indicating my address. This label will be attached to your letters, each time you deem it useful.

E) You ask me about what you have spent for the mikvah*. The Bureau, indeed, had not given its agreement for this amount [4]. The good order, to which my father-in-law, the Rebbe, attached such importance, requires that everything not part of the established program be decided on the advice of several persons and not of one alone. It is therefore the same for a project of assistance to the construction or repair of a mikvah*, which does not directly concern our activity but affects it, however, indirectly — for, as I was saying, when a Lubavitch institution exists in a certain place, it must concern itself with all that is bound to yiras Shamayim*.

Nevertheless, this expenditure was, in this case, justified. Yet, so that no disorder result from it, it is important that you forewarn the Bureau or that you first inform here. It is only afterward that you will make a decision.

But one cannot turn back what is done, and you have surely already included this amount in the expenditures authorized by the Bureau.

F) In one of your letters, you tell me of the French translation of the Sichos with the youth [5]. It would be good to take an interest in it, if that is possible, and especially, as one of your letters specifies, if it can be carried out without expense or with a very reduced budget.

But a person must be charged with verifying its translation. Furthermore, when the proof is ready, it will have to be sent here so that it may be reread before its printing, so that errors that one would find, as the case may be, may still be corrected.

Of course, if you succeed in carrying all this out, it will be necessary to use the Sichos of preceding years, choosing each time the corresponding month. You will prepare each issue two months in advance to be sure that it appears in time.

G) You ask me whether it is good to make a girls' school in Meknes. It is clear that such an initiative is positive — not only in Meknes, but also in the other places. Nevertheless, one must guard against putting girls and boys together — not only that they not be in the same classes, but also that they not pass through the same entrance and exit doors.

To the extent possible, they will be in different buildings and on different streets, for in this matter, the more cautious one is, the better.

With my blessing for success in your mission,
