Greetings and blessings,

I learned with satisfaction, from your letter, that you have set a time to study Chassidus*. Nevertheless, I regret that, after so many years during which you yourself and the family ... have lived in ..., you have not had the possibility of gathering at least ten persons who participate with you in this study.

Is it conceivable that you settled, with all your family, in ... solely to earn your living or to obtain financial support for the benefit of the yeshivah*? Certainly, ensuring the financing of those who devote themselves to the study of the Torah is particularly important. Commenting on the verse "those who support her are happy" [1], the Zohar* says: "Do not read meushar — happy — but merosho — at her head", as the chassidic* maamar* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, entitled "Eitz Chaim Hi Lamachazikim Bah", said on Simchas Torah* 5699, [explains].

Despite all this, one must not forget the Torah itself. One cannot content oneself with supporting financially those who do so. Consult on this tractate Kesuvos 111b, according to which only one who is incapable of personally studying the Torah can fulfill his obligation by acting in this way. Of course, this does not apply to those who have had the merit of receiving a Torah education, in particular within the framework of the Lubavitch yeshivah*.

It is clear and evident that you must study the Torah yourself and strive to have others also take part in the teaching that you have had the merit to know. It must therefore be a certainty for you and for the family ... that you do not find yourself in ... solely for material reasons, including the most elevated. You must also seek out spirituality there.

You must be the spiritual guide and the channel conveying the light of Chassidus* to ... and its region. If such an accomplishment is expected of you, you surely possess all the powers necessary to bring it to fruition. If you make efforts in this direction, they will be crowned with success, in keeping with the promise of the Alter Rebbe.

... נהניתי ממ"ש במכ' ע"ד קביעות עתים שיש להם בלימוד הדא"ח, אף שמצטער אני אשר אחרי השנים הרבות שהוא ומשפחת... וכו' דרים ב... הנה לא עלה בידם לאסוף לכה"פ מנין של אנשים שישתתפו ג"כ בלימוד הדא"ח עמהם, והאומנם אפשר להיות שנתגלגלו הם וב"ב ל... רק בשביל פרנסה גשמית או בשביל העבודה [ד]תמיכת הישיבה?! ואף כי תמכין דאורייתא הוא ענין נעלה ביותר וכפירוש הזהר ותומכי' מאושר א"ת מאושר אלא מראשו (נתבאר במאמר כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע ד"ה עץ חיים היא למחזיקים בה, שמח"ת תרצ"ט) הנה אחכ"ז אסור לשכוח על התורה עצמה, כי א"א לצאת ידי חובתו במה שתומכים באחרים שהם ילמדו (עיין בזה כתובות דף קי"א ע"ב מי ששייך רק לעבודה כזו ויוצא בזה, משא"כ אלו שזכו להתחנך באהלה של תורה ובפרט בישיבת תומכי תמימים, הרי) פשיטא וברור שצריך ללמוד גם-כן בעצמו וגם לראות שגם אחרים ילמדו תורה הלזו שזכה הוא להיות שייך אלי', ובמילא צ"ל ברור בעיניו ובעיני משפחת... וכו' שהיותם ב... הוא לא רק ענין הקשור בגשמיות (אף כי בהמעולה שבגשמיות) אלא ג"כ ברוחניות - היינו שהם צריכים להיות המשפיע והצנור שע"י יאיר אור תורת החסידות ב... והסביבה וכיון שתובעים זה מאתם, בטח ניתנו להם הכחות להביא זה מהכח אל הפועל, וכשישתדלו בזה הרי כהבטחת אדמו"ר הזקן יצליחו.
