Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, which was not dated:

A) You tell me that, according to some, all the members of your community are not satisfied with you. You therefore ask me whether you should seek a position in another city.

In my opinion, you should not do so. For various reasons, it is preferable to make use of the ardor that you would have to display in finding a place elsewhere with the aim of making friends and acquaintances in your community, in order to have better contacts there with the people. Of course, these better contacts cannot be obtained at the price of concessions relating to Torah and mitzvos*.

Our Sages explain that one listens to the words of one who fears Hashem. You will also show them that you are effective in the management of the community, including in the activities for which you are not paid. It is in this way that you will weave good relations with the people, and therefore with Hashem, for our Sages affirm in Pirkei Avos*, Mishnah* 10, ch. 3, that "the one who is beloved of the creatures is beloved of Hashem" [1]. Consult also Sefer HaMaamarim Yiddish, p. 172, on the maamar* entitled "Hayah Omer".

B) You tell me that your wife is entering the ninth month of her pregnancy. May Hashem grant that this conclude with ease, that the birth take place in its proper time and easily, and that you have a healthy child.

You will strive to open the Aron HaKodesh* on the days of krias haTorah* until the birth, but you will, nevertheless, avoid ostentatious conduct. The birth will take place in a good and propitious moment.

במענה על מכתבו (בלי הוראת הכתיבה):

א) במ"ש אשר י"א שלא כל הבע"ב שבקהלתו שבעים רצון ממנו וכו' ובמילא שואל חוו"ד אם יחפש אחר משרה בעיר אחרת,

הנה לדעתי לא נכון הדבר, והמרץ אשר יוזקק להשקיע בחיפוש במקום אחר, טוב יותר מכמה טעמים, שישתמש בו כדי להרבות רעים וידידים בקהלתו עתה להיות מעורב יותר עם הבריות (מובן מעצמו אשר העירוב עם הבריות צ"ל לא ע"י ויתורים על עניני תורה ומצות) וכידוע מרז"ל כל שיש בו יראת שמים דבריו נשמעים, וכן להראות להם אשר הוא בר פועל גם בעניני הקהלה, גם אלו הענינים שאין מקבל שכירות בעדם אשר עי"ז נעשים אהוב על הבריות ובמילא אהוב גם על המקום וכמרז"ל כל שרוח הבריות נוחה הימנו רוח המקום נוחה הימנו (פרקי אבות משנה יו"ד פרק ג') ועיין ג"כ ספר המאמרים אידיש דף קע"ב ד"ה הוא הי' אומר.

ב) במענה על הודעתו אשר זוגתו תחי' נכנסה בחדש התשיעי להריונה, הנה יה"ר מהשי"ת שיוגמר ההריון בנקל ותהי' הלידה בעתה ובזמנה בנקל בזרעא חייא וקיימא, וישתדל (בלי בליטות בדבר) בפתיחת הארון בימי הקריאה בתורה עד אחר הלידה בשעה טובה ומוצלחת.
