By the grace of Hashem,

To the distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Shmaryahu [1],

Greetings and blessings,

A) I received your letter of 27 Nissan, as well as the two preceding ones, and I thank you for them. It is no doubt unnecessary to spend a long moment thanking you. The Mishnah* rules that the reward of a mitzvah* is the mitzvah itself [2]. This means that the greatest reward one can receive for having performed a good deed is that good deed itself.

In this manner, one attaches oneself to the One Who commanded its fulfillment, Who willed it. Such a reward exceeds Gan Eden* and the World to Come. Thus, commenting on the verse "Whom have I in Heaven" [3], the Alter Rebbe said: "I want only You Yourself", as is reported in the Shoresh Mitzvas HaTefillah [4], ch. 40.

B) I hope that in a few weeks you will receive in the Holy Land the visit of a young man, the great rav* and chassid*, Rav Shalom Haskind [5]. I am writing you on this matter as a follow-up to the discussion we had together when you were here, and in reply to your letter to Rav M. H. A. [6].

C) I spoke with you about the chassidic* manuscripts that are in the Holy Land, and I am a little surprised that nothing has come of it for the time being.

D) You stayed here for a relatively long period and we evoked various subjects, but the most fundamental question was not posed. It is the following: "Where are you?" [7]. You know that a minister asked the Alter Rebbe [8] what this question signifies.

The Rebbe explained to him that the Holy One, blessed is He, posed it to every man: "What are you doing? What are you becoming?" Certainly, all your actions are positive — they concern the association of Chabad* Chassidim*, the yeshivos*, the Kfar [9]. Yet the verse indeed says: "Do not hide yourself from your own flesh" [10]. Each person must also be concerned with his own self.

The question therefore arises: "Where are you, Rav Shmaryahu?" — with all the titles that are due you and that are cited at the beginning of this letter. And if you merit others, may they be added. But even after all that, the question still arises! What of your study of Chassidus* and of the revealed part of the Torah?

With my blessing for good health for your wife, for yourself, and for all the members of your family, that you may derive much chassidic* nachas* from yourself and from your close ones,

שלום וברכה!

בת"ח אאשר קבלתי מכ' מכ"ז ניסן וב' הקודמים, והלא בטח למותר להאריך בהבעת תודה, וכפסק המשנה שכר מצוה מצוה, היינו שבעשיית פעולה טובה הנה השכר היותר גדול שבזה היא הפעולה טובה עצמה, שעי"ז מתחברים עם המצוה, בעל הרצון, שלמעלה משכר דג"ע ועוה"ב וכו', וע"ד פתגם אדמו"ר הזקן על הפסוק מי לי בשמים כו' "איך וויל מער ניט אז דיך אליין" (שרש מצות התפלה פרק מ')...

ג) תקותי שבעוד איזה שבועות יבקר באה"ק ת"ו האברך הרה"ג הרה"ח וכו' מו"ה שלום שי' חאסקינד, וכותב הנני עד"ז - בהמשך להשיחה שהיתה בינינו כשהי' כבודו כאן, ובתור מענה על מכתבו להרמח"א שי'.

ד) לפלא קצת, שבמה שעוררתי אותו ע"ד ביכלעך דא"ח הנמצאים באה"ק ת"ו, הנה לע"ע לא נראה מזה כל רושם וכו'.

ה) באריכות הזמן, לפ"ע, שהי' פה - הנה דברו על כו"כ ענינים, אבל לא ע"ד הענין העיקרי והיא השאלה "איכה"? ידוע מענה אדמו"ר הזקן שענה להשר ששאל אותו פי' הדברים וביאר לו, שזהו שאלת הקב"ה לכאו"א מבני אדם, וואו ביזט דו? וואס טוט זיך מיט דיר? - בטח כל הפעולות טובות הנה, הן בעניני אגו"ח, הישיבות, הכפר וכו', אבל לאחכ"ז ציוה הכתוב ומבשרך אל תתעלם, שעל כאו"א לזכור על עצמו ג"כ. והשאלה: איכה? ר' שמרי' (עם כל התוארים האמורים מעלה בתחלת המכתב, ואם מגיע לו עוד תוארים הרי אדרבה וכו'. אבל אחכ"ז, השאלה היא) איכה? וואס טוט זיך מיט לערנען חסידות, נגלה וכו' וכו'?

בברכה לבריאות הנכונה לזוגתו תחי', לו ולכל ב"ב שי', ולרוב נחת חסידותי פון זיך אליין ומכל ב"ב שיחיו.
