Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1541 — Tzedakah

Volume 6 · Letter 13

By the grace of Hashem,

3 Iyar 5712,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 12 Nissan, to which was attached a request for a blessing. The latter will be read, in a propitious moment, at the tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe. Undoubtedly, he will invoke divine compassion for the satisfaction of the needs of each of those whom you mention in your letter.

You ask me how to rectify the past and you tell me that you do not have the strength to fast. Consult the biography of the Rebbe Maharash [1], at p. 72. One of his sayings is mentioned there: "Fasting, in the ordinary sense, consists of not eating from sunrise to sunset — that is, of becoming thin. The fast defined by the Torah, by contrast, is an act of avodas Hashem*, which entails reflecting, for fifteen minutes each day, upon what one must do to ensure one's own advancement."

The Rebbe Rashab [2] concludes:

"In this manner, not only does one transform the powers of one's mind, but, much more, one changes one's nature."

And my father-in-law, the Rebbe [3], adds:

"Each one can derive an instruction from this story — namely the necessity of meditating, fifteen minutes each day, upon one's own advancement."

In my opinion, this is in addition to the fact that, in general, it is not fitting to reflect too precisely upon the sins one has committed. It seems, as concerns you, that this is an intervention of your yetzer hara* to make you sad and melancholy. You must therefore be joyful, as it is said: "Serve Hashem with simchah*" [4], which entails two points: the state of being a servant, defined by Torah Or at the beginning of Parshas Mishpatim, which also includes the eved kenaani* — the one who is happy to do nothing — and, in parallel, the necessity that this avodah* be joyful.

Indeed, a brief reflection suffices to become aware of your fortune, of the pleasant lot that is yours, since you have the merit of being a chassid*. Consequently, whatever happens to you, you have the certainty that the Rebbe will place you in a true ray of light. Nevertheless, you must attach yourself strongly to him, by studying Chassidus*, by marking your love for your fellow.

The Alter Rebbe has already established [5] that the Injunction "you shall love your fellow as yourself" is the vessel for that other Injunction, "you shall love Hashem your Elokim".

כדי לקבל את הברכות מהשי״ת צריכים את הכלים המתאימים לזה,
