Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1539 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 6 · Letter 11 · To: jeune homme

By the grace of Hashem,

3 Iyar 5712,

Brooklyn,

To the young man, chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Avraham Mordechai,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 25 Nissan, in which you inform me that you have become engaged to Leah Reizel and that you have decided to live in Safriya [1]. You have decided to marry this summer.

May Hashem grant that this be with good mazal*, in a good and propitious moment. You will build a Jewish home, founded on Torah and mitzvos*, as they are explained and illuminated by the luminary of the Torah, which is Chassidus*.

You tell me that your kallah* is practically a year older than you, that she is called Leah Reizel but that she is commonly known as Reizel, whereas your own mother is called Miriam Leah [2]. The Tzemach Tzedek says, on this matter, in his responsa Even HaEzer, ch. 143, that "there is absolutely nothing to fear" [3]. Consult also his halachic* ruling at ch. 116, which a fortiori applies to your case.

You ask me whether all should call you Avraham Mordechai, or whether it suffices that you be given these two names when you are called to the Torah or when you sign in this manner. There is no rule on the matter, and I have not received an instruction in this regard. You will continue to adopt the conduct you have had until now.

Nevertheless, I see a contradiction between the beginning and the end of your letter. At the beginning of it, you tell me that you are called Avraham Mordechai Shmuel, and then subsequently you write only Avraham Mordechai.

You mention the time you set for your study of the Torah, in addition to that which concerns everyone [4]. I wrote, some time ago [5], that every chassid* must have two studies of the revealed part of the Torah and two others of Chassidus*, one in depth and the other more on the surface, each day, or at the very least several times a week.

One should reach the point that three days do not pass without an in-depth study. On what sefer* or what collection of chassidic* discourses should your study bear? You will take counsel on this with the older Chassidim*, and you will conform to what they tell you.

With my blessing for mazal tov* and success in all areas, materially and spiritually,
