Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1513 — Prayer

By the grace of Hashem,

13 Nissan 5712,

To the congregants of the shul of nusach Arizal*

of Albany Park, in Chicago,

may Hashem grant you long life,

I greet and bless you,

The distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Avraham Honsburg, transmitted to me your check for the maos chittin*[1] fund that I manage. I received it with satisfaction, and I address my brachah* to all the donors. May Hashem repay you by multiplying it. By the merit of your participation so that "he who is hungry shall come and eat"[2], Hashem shall help you, with the members of your families, and you shall have a kosher and joyous Yom Tov of Pesach.

Pesach is mentioned throughout the year, since we recall, in various tefillos*, the "remembrance of the exodus from Mitzrayim*." And tzedakah*, even if it is specifically connected to Pesach, as is the case for maos chittin, must also be present all year. In the simplest sense, it must be given constantly, and not only on Pesach. This goes without saying.

But, a point that is even more important, tzedakah is not only a gift of money. One can also offer it to a Jew, whether man or woman, by devoting to him one's time and by persuading others to do the same.

Another point characterizes tzedakah. If it is necessary to have pity on the Jewish body, how much more is it so for the Jewish neshamah*. When the latter is devoid of mitzvos, hungry for Torah, one must come to its aid. And our Sages, in chapter 27 of the Tanna DeVei Eliyahu, comment on the verse: "if you see a man naked, you shall cover him," in the following manner: "How is one to proceed? If you see a man who possesses no words of Torah, you shall teach them to him and you shall urge him to practice the mitzvos."

With my brachah for a kosher and joyous Yom Tov of Pesach, for all the congregants of your shul,

בנועם קבלתי ע"י הוו"ח אי"א נו"נ עוסק בצ"צ וכו' מוה"ר אברהם שי' האנזבורג, את ההמחאה לקופת מעות חטים שעל דעתי, והנני שולח ברכתי לכל המנדבים שהשי"ת ישלם להם כמה פעמים ככה, ועבור זה שמשתתפים שיהי' כל דכפין ייתי ויכון כל דצריך ייתי ויפסח, יעזור להם השי"ת וכב"ב שיחיו בחג כשר ושמח.

והנה פסח נזכר בכל השנה, שאומרים בשפלות שונות זכר ליציאת מצרים, ולכן הצדקה שאף שקשורה בפסח לבד כמו מעות חטים, בכ"ז צריכים לזכור אותה כל השנה, הן כפשוטו שצריכים ליתן צדקה לא לבד לחג הפסח כ"א גם במשך השנה כולה, שבודאי למותר להזכיר עד"ז, ועוד חשוב יותר שצריכים ליתן צדקה לא רק בכסף, כ"א לעשות צדקה עם יהודי איש או אשה לתת מעתו וטרחתו ולפעול גם על אחרים שיעשו כזאת. ועוד פרט בצדקה, שבמכל שכן מרחמנות על גוף יהודי, צריכים לרחם על נשמתו, שכאשר רואים שנשמתו ערומה מצות ורעבה לתורה, צריכים לעזור לו בזה, כדרז"ל בתנא דבי אליהו רבה פרק כ"ז, כי תראה ערום וכסיתו, כיצד, אלא אם ראית אדם שאין בו דברי תורה למדהו וזרזהו במצות.

בברכת חג הפסח כשר ושמח לכל מתפללי בית הכנסת.
