Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1510 — Chinuch
Volume 5 · Letter 291 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem,
13 Nissan 5712,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,
HaRav Yitzchak[1],
I greet and bless you,
A) You must prepare the krias haTorah*, and consequently you begin to daven at midday. You ask me what I think of it.
In my opinion, this is not good. Halachah* may permit such conduct, though with difficulty, since you read the "small Shema Yisrael"[2]. Nevertheless, in a city such as yours, what shall be said of such a manner of acting? Of course, this is in no way comparable to the way of proceeding of those who begin on time, continue without ceasing their tefillah*, and prolong it after midday[3]. In such a case, one can say that one has davened or that one has prepared oneself to do so during all this time. This is not your case, since you read the Torah, which has nothing to do with tefillah and its preparation.
B) The talmidim* ask which texts of Chassidus* they should study, the Likkutei Torah or the manuscripts[4].
All the talmidim are not identical, from this point of view. Everything also depends upon the time that they devote to the study of Chassidus. I have already said, for a long time, that the efforts must go in two directions. One must have not only a deep study but also, to a certain extent, a superficial study, at least on certain points.
One can learn, in this fashion, Shaar HaYichud VeHaEmunah and Iggeres HaTeshuvah, the two parts of the Tanya, several chapters of the Derech Mitzvosecha, the work of the Tzemach Tzedek, several manuscripts[4]. To say which ones, it is necessary to know, as I noted, who these talmidim are, what they learn. It belongs to the mashpia* found on the spot to decide in this domain.
C) Chassidus explains, in various texts, that a grain planted in the earth must decompose, and therefore return to the earth, in order to be able to germinate. Indeed, the transformation of matter is possible only if there is a passage through a phase of nothingness. You ask yourself about this, and you do not see how to make grow in this way that which can subsequently grow continuously.
I do not see what your difficulty is here. A plant which germinates becomes more and more large. By contrast, its nature does not change, unlike the chick which is born from the egg or the ear of grain which grows from the seed. By contrast, that which can grow in a continuous manner is, for example, the tree that grows.
This image describes, within the chain of worlds, the passage from true existence to created existence. There is no question, in such a case, of growing in a continuous manner, chas veshalom*. It is therefore normal to traverse a phase of intermediate nothingness.
D) You ask me about the minhag*[5] which consists of counting the Omer after the Aleinu prayer. Should one, in such a case, recite Kaddish after this counting?
If I may, basing myself on the necessity of avoiding unnecessary Kaddishim, I would say that it must be recited after the counting of the Omer and not between Aleinu and this counting. If this position is not accepted, and if one wants to say the orphans' Kaddish after Aleinu, one may say a second after the counting of the Omer, on condition that such be the local minhag.
E) I myself regret not being able to reread the text of the sichos* and the maamarim* delivered during farbrengens*. But what can I do? I do not have my time at my disposal. I strive to do it, to the fullest extent possible. It is the same for the letters that I receive and to which I respond with delay, for the same reason.
With my brachah* for a kosher and joyous Yom Tov of Pesach,
Notes

(2) Which is read in the morning, before tefillah, at the hour at which it is possible to recite it.
(3) Because the search for fervor causes them to daven slowly.
(4) Discourses of the masters of Chassidus.
