Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1509 — Tzedakah
Volume 5 · Letter 290 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem,
12 Nissan 5712,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,
scion of an illustrious lineage, HaRav Efraim Eliezer HaKohen[1],
I greet and bless you,
I duly received your brachah* letter on the occasion of the eleventh day of the month of redemption[2]. You know the Divine promise, formulated particularly to the Kohanim*, His holy people[3]: "and I will bless them." It indicates that he who grants a brachah receives one himself, that of the Holy One, blessed be He, which is obtained with its interest, which surpasses the principal.
This may be compared to an explanation that appears in various texts of Chassidus*, regarding the affirmation of our Sages according to which "the strength of the son surpasses that of the father," which is, in reality, obtained thanks to the father[4].
It is the same for what is the object of our discussion. It is indeed an interest that surpasses the principal, but also flows from it. Likewise, the Divine revelation surpasses the effort of the man. Yet this effort is necessary in order to provoke it, and a relation therefore exists between one and the other. In this sense, the effort of the man has a superiority since it triggers the Divine revelation, draws it down, if one may say so.
It is in this measure that one may speak of interest and principal. And in this resides all our strength. Certainly, "what are we and what is our life?" Our efforts can scarcely realize more than a needle's point. Now, this latter permits the obtaining of an opening as wide as the gateway of the Sanctuary.
With my brachah for a kosher and joyous Yom Tov of Pesach, in all the meanings of these terms,
P. S.: I asked that the response to your questions be conveyed to you by telephone:
A) I am not present when the matzos shemuros* are baked, on the eve of Pesach.
B) If you decide to attend this baking, you may participate in it, by drawing water or in any other manner.
C) The baking of our matzos shemuros concludes around midday.
