Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1508 — Health
Volume 5 · Letter 289 · 11 Nissan 5712
11 Nissan 5712,
Brooklyn, New York,
In the sichah* of the last day of Pesach printed at the end of this kuntres*[1], my father-in-law, the Rebbe, announces the necessity of "purifying the atmosphere by introducing into it words of Torah. The health of each one depends upon this atmosphere. If it is made of Torah and mitzvos, life is healthy. If it bears scepticism, chas veshalom*, it exposes one to a danger[2], and one can then contract various contagious illnesses."
If it is so for a man in good health, how much more is it the case for one who is weak. And, if he is ill, even slightly, the danger is still greater. A fortiori, it is so if it is a serious illness.
Our Sages say[3] that "the illness, that is the yetzer hara*." It is only in the world to come that Hashem shall cause it to disappear[4]. It is at the origin of the serious illness, the desire for what is forbidden, and of the slight illness, the desire for what is permitted[5].
He cites, particularly, in this regard, the exodus from Mitzrayim*, the eating of matzah, and the prohibition of chametz, on Pesach. It is said that "the people fled"[6], for the evil of the Jewish neshamos* still retained all its force, in the left side of the heart[7], since their impurity was not removed from them until the moment of mattan Torah*. Then, they contracted it again, at the chet* of the eigel*[8].
Yisrael was then comparable to the only son of the king who falls ill. In such a case, the latter must take a healing food[9] and cause every other food to disappear from the house[10].
The purification of the atmosphere is thus defined, and the necessity of it is clearly emphasized. It is possible by thinking of the words of Torah, of Tehillim, of Mishnah, of the Tanya, and by pronouncing them, as this sichah explains precisely.
It is also in this fashion that one hastens the moment of the geulah*. Then, "the chametz shall no longer be able to dominate and cause harm to Yisrael." Moreover, the yetzer hara, also called chametz, shall be burned by the intense light of Malchus*, and shall be accomplished the promise according to which "it is not[11] in haste that you shall go out, you shall not flee, for Hashem shall walk before you," very soon and truly in our days.

Notes
(1) This letter of the Rebbe was written as an introduction to the kuntres of the previous Rebbe, edited on the occasion of Pesach 5712, which is printed in Sefer HaMaamarim Kuntreisim, volume 3.
(2) The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the laws of opinions of the Rambam, at the beginning of chapter 6."
(3) The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "Midrash Vayikra Rabbah, chapter 16, paragraph 8. See in the siddur, the weekday Shemoneh Esrei, the chassidic discourse entitled 'Mi chamocha,' the discourse 'Vayechal Moshe' of the Tzemach Tzedek, in the second volume of the Derech Mitzvosecha, chapter 3 of the Kuntres Etz Chaim."
(4) The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "Maseches Sukkah 52a. The tzaddikim, free of the yetzer hara, are few, as chapters 1 and 14 of the Tanya explain."
(5) The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the sequence of chassidic discourses Vechachah 5637, at paragraph 63."
(6) From Mitzrayim.
(7) The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "Chapter 31 of the Tanya."
(8) The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "This is what the Zohar, volume 1, page 52b, page 126b, volume 3, page 193b, says. Maseches Shabbos 146a and Avodah Zarah 22b say that they did not contract this impurity again. This is also the opinion of the Zohar, volume 3, page 14b. In fact, the Nitzotzei Oros explains that they recovered it partially. One shall also consult the Maharsha on Maseches Yevamos 103b, the Torah Or Mishpatim, at the beginning of the discourse 'Vayar'u.' This point shall not be developed here."
(9) Namely, the matzah.
(10) The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "Zohar, volume 2, page 183b, and Mikdash Melech, at this same reference."
(11) The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the Shnei Luchos HaBris, Maseches Pesachim, third commentary, and the beginning of the Vechachah sequence, previously cited."
