Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1507 — Chinuch
Volume 5 · Letter 288 · To: élèves des Yechivot
By the grace of Hashem,
the eleventh day of the month of
the redemption 5712,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the talmidim* of the yeshivos,
to whom Hashem shall grant long life,
I greet and bless you,
With the permission of the great Rabbanim*, roshei yeshivah*, I address myself specifically to you, my friends, talmidim of these yeshivos, by the present, in addition to my letter, which was addressed to all, on Rosh Chodesh Nissan[1].
The beginning of the Yom Tov of Pesach, which approaches, for us and for all Yisrael, for good, is the Seder, in the course of which each one must "penetrate himself with awe in order to put into practice the injunction of our Sages, the mitzvah of the Seder and the Haggadah, of which not a single detail is empty of meaning"[2].
Concerning the precept "and you shall tell your son," the Torah defines four categories of children, "a wise one and a wicked one and a simple one and one who does not know how to ask." And the author of the Haggadah has placed the wicked one near the wise one[3], even adding, between them, an "and" of coordination[4].
Consequently:
A) There is also hope for the wicked one. Hashem permits a wise child to exert a positive influence upon him, to come to his aid so that he may improve his conduct.
For this, he who was a wicked one until then must join himself to the wise one and submit to him.
B) The wise one must not say that he has nothing to do with the wicked one, that the latter must be lost, due to his wickedness. Indeed, the Jews are responsible for one another and interdependent. Each is therefore obligated to bring him back to the good[5].
Nevertheless, the wise one must always remember that the wicked one must follow him, receive what he gives him. The opposite is, of course, out of the question.
C) The wise one must remember that "sin lies at the door"[6]. The greater one is, the more effective an evil inclination one has. And "the wicked one (that one bears within oneself) lies in wait for the tzaddik* in order to kill him." One must therefore be particularly cautious, implore the mercy of Hashem so that He grant His help. It is only thus that "one shall be able to vanquish" the wicked one whom one bears within oneself[7].
If it is necessary to come to the aid of the wicked one, with the previously recalled precautions, how much more must one do so for the simple one, the foolish one[8] and the one who does not know how to ask.
When the wise child corrects, improves, refines, and elevates the wicked one, the simple one, and the one who does not know how to ask, each being introduced by an "and" of coordination, that is, a vav, defined as "a letter of truth"[9], which therefore unveils the Torah of truth, our request can then be fulfilled, "bless us, our Father, all as one"[10].
It was so when Hashem gave the Torah to His people, Yisrael. Then, "Yisrael encamped there," in the singular[11].
Such was the finality of the exodus from Mitzrayim*, as it is said: "When you bring this people out of Mitzrayim, you shall serve Hashem upon this mountain."
But, subsequently[12], the chet* intervened. Men and the world became more coarse. The effort accomplished currently permits one to refine and to elevate it, anew. Then, when Mashiach* comes, the materiality of the body and of the world shall know elevation, and "the honor of Hashem shall be revealed."
With my brachah* for a kosher and joyous Yom Tov of Pesach,
Menachem Schneerson,
P. S.: This letter is written for the Yom Tov of Pesach which approaches, but its content is timely at every moment.
Notes
(1) This is letter no. 1477.
(2) The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "According to the Maharil."
(3) The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "Indeed, the four children correspond to the four spiritual worlds, Atzilus, Beriah, Yetzirah, and Asiyah. The wicked one ought therefore to have been the last. One shall consult, in this regard, the Avudraham."
(4) The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "The absence of this 'and' could not have led to error. For it marks the addition, even according to Rabbi Yonatan, as Rashi indicates, in his commentary on Maseches Menachos 91a. Once one bases oneself on logic, there is no reason to make a difference between the words of the Torah and those of the Sages. One shall consult the references cited in the Sdei Chemed, principles, chapter 6, paragraphs 8 to 13."
(5) The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "Chapter 32 of the Tanya."
