To the distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,

HaRav Pinchas[1],

I greet and bless you,

A) You evoke the printing of the Tanya. I have already written several times[2], in connection with various subjects, that my words must be interpreted as proposals, as the expression of my position. They can therefore be accepted or refused.

In the present case, my opinion is that there is no reason to typeset the text of the Tanya anew. It suffices to photograph the one that was proofread by the Rebbe Rashab, that is, the edition published by the Lubavitch Yeshiva, in 5660[3].

B) You write to me that, according to a story that was reported to you, the Alter Rebbe had a reason for placing an additional vav in his Tanya. I do not know to which vav you are alluding.

One can deduce from a letter of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, dated 28 Tammuz 5692[4], that it concerns the beginning of chapter 41: ve'ikara veshorsho, "and its essential aspect and its source." One could indeed have said reishis ha'avodah ikara, "the beginning of the service of Hashem, its essential aspect," and not ve'ikara, "and its essential aspect."

C) You point out, in your letter, that the edition of 5660[3] of the Tanya must also be corrected. You cite, for example, chapter 31 of Iggeres HaKodesh. In fact, this edition requires several corrections, of which a list has been drawn up, in a letter of the great Rav, distinguished chassid who fears Hashem, one of the most senior chassidim, HaRav Asher[5], shochet* of Nikolayev.

In the new edition of the Tanya, this list of corrections shall surely be printed at the end of the book. Indeed, I did not have the heart to change the body of the text, in order not to modify the previously cited edition.

... ג) במה שמעורר בענין הדפסת התניא, הנה כבר כתבתי כ"פ ובנוגע לכמה ענינים, שהדברים שהנני כותב זהו בדרך הצעה וביאור דעתי, ובמילא הברירה בידם אם לקבל או לדחות, אבל דעתי הוא שאין להדפיס התניא מחדש כ"א בדרך פוטו מהדפוס שהוגה ע"י כ"ק אדמו"ר (מוהרש"ב) נ"ע, היא הוצאת תומכי תמימים ליובאוויטש תר"ס.

ד) מ"ש במכ' ששמע סיפור שאדמו"ר הזקן דקדק בתניא שלו אפילו וא"ו מיותר, ואינו יודע לאיזה וא"ו הכוונה. הנה כפי שמשמע ממכתב כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר מכ"ח תמוז תרצ"ב, זהו שייכות לתיבת "ועיקרה ושרשה" בפרק מ"א בתחלתו, שהי' יכול לכתוב ראשית העבודה עיקרה, וכתב ועיקרה.

ה) מה שמעיר במכ' שגם בתניא הנדפס בתר"ס, יש מקום להגיה, ומציין לאגה"ק פל"א, הנה בכמה מקומות הוצאה הנ"ל צריכה תיקון, וישנם רשימת כמה תיקונים מכתב הרה"ג וו"ח אי"א נו"נ מזקני אנ"ש וכו' ר' אשר שו"ב מניקאלאייעוו, ובל"נ בהוצאה החדשה של התניא יודפס ג"כ לוח תיקונים אליו בסוף הספר, כי לא מלאני לבי לתקן בפנים, שלא לשנות מהוצאה הנ"ל.
