By the grace of Hashem,

5 Nissan 5712,

Brooklyn,

I greet and bless you,

The Yom Tov of Pesach approaching, I take the liberty of addressing to you these few lines.

Whoever meditates upon the events of these recent years understands that one cannot apply to them the great principles of history. Indeed, what has come to pass departs entirely from what these principles would have permitted one to imagine. One sees this particularly in what is currently unfolding in Eretz HaKodesh*.

One of the conclusions of this reflection is the following. Very often, the spirit and the substance prevail over matter and form. And, one has been able to observe lately, in concrete fashion, that the victory was carried by the camp that was materially the weakest, whose strength resided in its spirituality.

It is so for the kehillah*, and one can deduce from this that it is also the case for each individual, particularly those who belong to the people of Yisrael. After the terrible persecutions that have marked these recent years, each man and each woman among us is a survivor, whose responsibility finds itself considerably increased, in relation to what it could have been until this day.

Moreover, the conduct of an individual can also serve as an example to all his entourage. In such a case, his responsibility is all the greater, for many persons shall adopt the same attitude.

My purpose is not to make a discourse. The object of the present is the following. I possess some information about you, and I know, in particular, that you were, for some time, a talmid* of the Lubavitch Yeshiva. It is therefore impossible that all this should remain in vain, chas veshalom*. The natural principles establish that matter cannot be lost. It only undergoes a mutation, or else is transformed into energy, but, in any event, it is not lost. Not the smallest particle disappears from it. How much more is it so for the spirituality, which is not subject to the limits inherent in matter.

Hashem has given you the merit of dwelling in Eretz HaKodesh, a land "toward which always are turned the eyes of Hashem, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year," according to the expression of the verse. There, you exercise public functions and you constitute an example for a certain category of persons. A brief reflection shall permit you to determine the responsibility that is yours, first in relation to the dozens of generations of your ancestors, each of them having given his life to constitute the golden chain of the history of the Jewish people, rising along the way of Hashem.

You have also a responsibility toward the founders and the leaders of the Lubavitch Yeshiva, who invested their ardor, their attention, and their efforts in each of their talmidim. You are, finally, accountable toward yourself and toward all the members of your family, that is to say, toward the nefesh haElokis* that each Jew and each Jewess bears within himself. The latter feels a profound desire to use the forces at its disposal in daily existence, in concrete action. For, it is precisely in this that resides the quality and the strength of Yisrael, whose motto is "action above all."

If you meditate upon this responsibility, I have good hope, according to the expression of our Sages, that the arrow shot into the air shall fall back upon its point. Finally, and very soon, you yourself and your family shall be the example and the symbol of a Jewish and chassidic home, not only by your ideas but also by your concrete action. And nothing resists determination.

With my brachah* of good health and wishing you, as well as all the members of your family, a kosher and joyous Pesach,
